It’s my 9th-annual holiday gift guide, y’all!
I’m not gonna lie, friends: my holiday gift guide almost didn’t happen this year. As you’ve heard me say for years, this little labour of love takes many hundreds of hours to put together. And, well, 2020 just hasn’t blessed me with a lot of free time.
Like many of you, I have kids at home almost 24/7 and both my free time and my work time have taken a hit as a result.
But what is Mommy Gearest HQ without a holiday gift guide?! I just couldn’t let you down. So here we are.

It’s later than usual, I gave up on ensuring each category was equally weighted and I had to wipe out the idea that I could photograph all of the products myself, but there’s one place I didn’t cut any corners — the playing, trying, testing and, ummm, eating. I’ve committed to personally curating this guide since I started creating the first one nine seasons ago and I’m proud to say that everything in this year’s guide also gets my bona fide stamp of approval.
You won’t find anything suggested here based on JPGs and fact sheets. Nor will you find any affiliate links or kick-backs. Just a whole bunch of fun stuff I think make for great gifts this holiday season. In a very random order — because ain’t nobody got time for anything else.
But I do want to take a moment to point out a new featured category this year, and that’s a little something I’m calling the Makers’ Corner. I think we all know how many small businesses are struggling this year and I hope there’s at least one thing on your holiday wish list that doesn’t come from a big retailer or international brand. (Not that there’s anything wrong with those; they provide easier access for many shoppers thanks to their broader reach and you’ll see I’ve included many!) But, especially this holiday season, I encourage each of you to support a local or small Canadian business, whether it’s one I’m featuring here or within your own community. Great news — all of the makers listed here ship across the country and some ship to the USA, too.
I am so excited to bring you my 2020 holiday gift guide, complete with a bunch of exclusive discount codes and one heck of a holiday giveaway to go with it. The total prize value? More than $8,300.00. READ. THAT. AGAIN. (Yep, I added the decimal place so there was no mistaking that total.) Staggering, right?! And this year, it’s winner-take-all.
That’s what I wrote: one very lucky person is going to win EVERYTHING.
You’ll find the entry widget at the end of the guide and on my contest page, and be sure to come back frequently to check the widget because I’ll be adding *new bonus entries* every few days throughout the contest period to give you even more chances to win!

2020 holiday gift guide: babies & toddlers
WHAT’S IT CALLED? Owlet Monitor Duo 3
Why do I love it? OK, so it’s not exactly a gift for a baby, but let’s not get hung up on semantics. And it’s not me who loves the Owlet Smart Sock 3 + Cam Duo — it’s my sister-in-law who just had her first baby in early November and has been testing out this product for me ever since. In her own words: “The best gift you can give a new mom is peace of mind and a few extra hours of sleep! The smart sock system is simple to set up and even easier to use. (Just make sure you charge the sock for four hours before its first use to avoid needing the chat feature like I did!) The sock is super soft and easy to put on, take off and adjust. The app is simple and user-friendly. I love that the “Owlet Care” app records my baby’s oxygen levels, heart rate and various sleep readings. I get a report after each night, too, and if there’s an abnormal reading, my smartphone alerts me immediately. The best part for me is the peace of mind the monitor duo provides; the first night we used it was the first night my husband and I actually got some sleep ourselves because it erased our worry. One of the best features of the smart sock, as I discovered on day one, is the real-time online support; there’s a “chat” function in the app that allows you to text support and they respond almost instantly. I also love that we’ll be able to use the monitor for years to come, long after the smart sock is no longer needed. The price tag might seem extravagant, but allowing this new mama a chance to rest and grab a few extra hours (or minutes) of sleep is priceless.”

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Stainless Sea baby seahorse spoon set
Why do I love it? You’ll also find Stainless Sea products in the kids gift guide and Makers’ Corner section because this little Canadian company has so many cool products that I had to feature more than just one. Created by a doctor (also a mom) who cares about both our bodies AND our oceans, the products are made from a high-quality food-grade stainless steel, which is inert and will NOT leach into your food or body. It’s non-toxic, incredibly durable, easy to clean, sustainable and recyclable. Stainless Sea also donates a portion of any profit directly to charities helping to conserve our oceans. This wee spoon set is a beautiful baby gift that will become a treasured part of your child’s memory box down the road. WHAT’S IT CALLED? Playskool Glo Worm SmartSense
Why do I love it? Who else remembers the Glo Worm?! I know I’m not alone here. Well, its baaaaack! And now it’s loaded with SmartSense technology. Babies and toddlers will enjoy this cry-detecting, music-playing, voice-recordable little critter. And it’s machine-washable, too. I love that you can record a short message, a little lullaby, some white noise or any other soothing sound that lets your babe know you’re not far away (and you’re probably on your way). And as your baby grows into a toddler, recording his or her own voice will be so cute.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Sesame Street Rock & Rhyme Elmo
Why do I love it? What is a Mommy Gearest Holiday Gift Guide without ELMO? I know I’ve featured one nearly every year this guide has existed but that’s because ELMO IS FRICKIN’ ADORABLE and this toy just keeps reinventing itself. Now your toddler can strum the guitar to rock out with Elmo! In addition to being bilingual (Spanish and English — sorry fellow Canadians, no français!) and singing a few tunes, he also responds to nose squeezes with some silly honking noises.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Baby Alive Baby Grows Up
Why do I love it? Baby Alive doesn’t just pretend to “grow up” by changing clothes or appearance. No. She literally GROWS. From opening her eyes to see what colour they’ll be to discovering her hair colour, this Baby Alive actually gets taller. Want to watch it happen again? Just re-set and she’ll grow over and over. (Just be sure to brush her hair first.) I love that there’s a “mommy” or “daddy” mode so even little boys who may have been made to feel uncomfortable by someone about playing with dolls can be confident that it’s A-OK. I also love that you don’t just have to get a Caucasian Baby Alive.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Fisher-Price Rollin’ Rovee
Why do I love it? Warning — this is bigger than it appears! But I always appreciate toys that have longevity because they grow with your child through different ages and stages, and the Rollin’ Rovee does just that. From tummy time to little crawlers to busy toddler fun, this has four interactive modes featuring music and activities that’ll encourage your wee one to get moving. Its face lights up and though it may be hard to see on-screen, those arms are actually quite soft to the touch but can also clap, play peek-a-boo, roll over and play with the ball. The integrated Smart Stages learning content also helps reinforce the alphabet, numbers, opposites and more.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Fisher-Price Walk, Bounce & Ride Pony
Why do I love it? Ideal for babies from about nine months through three years old, this grow-with-me interactive toy will work for your little strider as s/he learns to walk independently and the handle folds under the pony for safe storage when it’s no longer needed. It bounces, too, for extra fun! It features buttons, songs, sounds and phrases, and has activities that encourage fine motor skills and dexterity.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Snugabye Baby Holiday Buffalo Plaid Bundle
Why do I love it? That’s right — you can match your baby this holiday season! These are the same onesies we wore for our Instagram photo that helped launch this year’s holiday gift guide, so let me help you out — the adult sizing is unisex so think of it as being closer to men’s than women’s when you’re trying to figure out what size you are. Miss Q normally wears a girls’ 10-12 and has room to grow in the XXS (since there are no big kid sizes) while The K Man will grow into a M (and usually wears a men’s small). Big B, however, is just a tad too tall for the XL to be right for him; I’d say you’d want to be 6’4″ or under to rock this size.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Leap Frog Speak and Learn Puppy
Why do I love it? Music and learning go hand in hand as Baily the puppy interacts with your child, moves around and even records his or her voice. From flapping ears and real-time responses, Bailey takes your child’s suggestions in story mode and creates narratives around them. Explore animal facts and sounds, food, feelings and letters — which can evolve over time as your child grows.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Béké-Bobo Small Therapeutic Bear
Why do I love it? Not only is this therapeutic compress entirely handmade in Quebec, but it’s super multifunctional and certified as a Class I Medical Device (recognized by both Health Canada and the European Union). Use it — warm or cool — on little ears to help with earache pain, on cheeks when your baby is teething, on baby’s tummy to help relieve constipation and more. We have the “fox” version and there are many other characters or patterns you can choose from on each bear’s tummy; there are also two sizes but I the small size is definitely best for babies and toddlers. I love that you can buy a replacement cover, too, so you’ll never be without while washing a cover.

2020 holiday gift guide: kids (4+)
WHAT’S IT CALLED? Little Tikes Tobi Robot Smartwatch
Why do I love it? Yes, this is one of THE hottest toys of 2020 — and Little Tikes has one set aside just for you if you win my gift guide giveaway! The first thing you need to know, though, is that the watch face is huge. I mean, FREAKING ENORMOUS. And will likely be too big for most little kids to wear comfortably for long. However…it does come with a great little stand and the watch easily pops into it and props it up for endless play. Miss Q thought it would be best for kids who are in the 4-7 age range, and I really like that each game and activity have varying levels of difficulty so littler kids can progress as they get older. The dual cameras are actually surprisingly clear, making filming videos and snapping selfies a good experience. The built-in pedometer seems legit, and the touchscreen is satisfyingly fast. There are even little moving arms and legs that pop out of the sides when Tobi is excited. It doesn’t come with a wall plug, but does recommend charging it directly in a computer’s USB port. Battery life is reasonable and of course depends on how each child uses the Tobi Smartwatch.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? L.O.L. Surprise: Confetti Under Wraps
Why do I love it? Our house is still not clear of the L.O.L. Surprise obsession. And perhaps that’s because the brand keeps reinventing the way kids can discover what’s inside. The Confetti Under Wraps series had Miss Q excited and enthralled for quite some time — and my carpet ended up covered in confetti in the process! (It’s big and easy to clean up, but be prepared.) She did need some help pulling the confetti trigger, so a parent or older sibling may need to be on standby.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Star Wars Mission Fleet Gear Class
Why do I love it? This is the smaller of the two Star Wars Mission Fleet Gear Class collectible figures and vehicles, and I love the price point since sometimes the Star Wars-branded stuff can be pricier. My personal favourite is Ahsoka Tano — the Padawan learner to Anakin Skywalker and a hero of the Clone Wars — who comes with an OMS Devilfish Sub. These 2.5″ figures (yes, she’s really that small despite the picture) are great for car rides and, one day, plane rides.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Kids’ Alpaca Thermal Terry Sock from SHED Chetwyn Farm
Why do I love it? When we were doing our road trips from Toronto series this past summer, we discovered an alpaca farm in Prince Edward County with the cutest little shop. The owner was minding the store and told us all about his path to alpaca farming. And then we bought socks. And, OMG, if you’ve never slipped your foot into an alpaca sock, you’re missing out! Guys — I don’t even like socks. And I love these. They’re so soft and cozy — it’s comfort food for your feet. And the little kid ones are so, so, so adorable! Plus, you’ll feel good knowing you’re supporting a small Canadian business, which is why you’ll also find something else from Chetwyn Farm in the Makers’ Corner below.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Secret Crush Large & Mini Doll set
Why do I love it? To be fair, you’re paying for the overall experience rather than the dolls themselves. See that little marshmallow hammer? Your kid can take out any aggression by whacking the heart-shaped interior of this package to reveal not one but two dolls and then discover a heap of surprises along the way. There are quite a few steps involved, so it’s an activity that will keep on giving even after all the secrets are uncovered — like putting together the smaller doll and stringing together a beaded necklace for the larger doll. The plastic packaging becomes storage and a doll stand, allowing the entire thing to become portable fun. You know, once we’re all portable again one day…

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Fisher-Price® Thomas & FriendsTM Talking Thomas & Percy Train Set
Why do I love it? I mean, it’s Thomas. What’s not to love? This would have been something The K Man would have gone absolutely bananas for around four or five years old — at the height of his Thomas & Friends obsession. The set includes some of your child’s favourite places from the island of Sodor (Vicarstown Bridge, Blue Mountain, the Railyard and Brendam docks); it also includes motorized Thomas and Percy train engines who recognize and talk to each other when they meet on
the track!

WHAT’S IT CALLED? LEGO Super Mario Adventures with Mario Starter Course
Why do I love it? LEGO is and always has been a favourite among all of the kids and adults in my house. Though The K Man lost interest a few years ago, Miss Q is still a diehard collector and creator. What’s especially cool about this set is that after you’re finished building, the Adventures with Mario begin. Players earn virtual coins as they move LEGO Mario from the Start Pipe to the Goal Pole thanks to a series of spinning and cloud platforms. He offers instant expressive responses through the LCD screens and speaker. And then you can rearrange the bricks to create new levels to play and there are expansion sets available, too. You’ll want to download the free LEGO Super Mario app.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? FUJIFILM Instax Mini 11 camera
Why do I love it? We’ve had a couple of different versions of the Instax cameras over the years, but I love the more compact size of the Mini, its stunning array of available colours (especially this gorgeous blue) and new features like Auto Exposure — which means you don’t need to adjust exposure manually based on lighting conditions — and One-Touch Selfie Mode with a built-in Selfie Mirror. It also comes with Custom Shutter Buttons that allow your tween or teen to customize his or her camera.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? V-Tech Myla’s Sparkling Friends
Why do I love it? Although this is suggested for 4-8 year olds, it’s probably more suited to 4-6 year olds. At least that’s what Miss Q is telling me. There are several different “friends” in this collection, and they all come with some very cute accessories. Each of them will tell you how they’re feeling and respond to various touches; and one thing they have in common is that they light up in a kaleidoscope of colours. Note that the batteries that come with it are only for the demo and will soon run out with normal use — so pick up a pair of AAAs.

The quality of this set is EXCEPTIONAL and will undoubtedly last for many years. Stainless Sea also donates a portion of any profit directly to charities helping to conserve our oceans. The Brio Starter Lift & Load Set (not shown above) is the perfect complement for its SmartTech Record & Play Engine. The starter set is comes with a crane, truck, pop-up hood engine and loaded wagon and even has a warning sign and small mountain as well. WHAT’S IT CALLED? RAZER tech trio: Cynosa V2, BlackShark V2 X & Viper Mini
Why do I love it? “These are next level gaming products, Mom.” That’s how The K Man describes anything from Razer. And when I asked why they’re so much better than any of the generic products we’ve cobbled together for him over the years (cast-offs from our old desktops, for example), it apparently comes down to keys that just “tap better” and make “really good gaming noises.” And I imagine that’s because Razer uses individual switches for each key — not a membrane. This produces more responsive keys that are, I’m told, essential for playing high-octane games. The Viper Mini mouse is just right for smaller tween hands. You might be wondering, though, why I’d recommend a corded headset…well, the wireless set my kid needed to be recharged WAY too often. These ear pads are also crazy comfy and your kid can even personalize the sound according to his or her gaming preferences. The part I like the best? All the funky backlit keys and colours that these Razer products emit. So cool!

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Zenchies kids’ scrunchy
Why do I love it? Throwback! Scrunchies are back and I’m excited that my Mini Me also likes wearing her “hair-ties” around her wrist, but she also figured out pretty quickly that stringing an elastic band around your wrist for too long isn’t so good for the circulation. Zenchies scrunchies to the rescue! I don’t know what I like more — the beautiful fabrics or awesome patterns. I definitely love the Mommy & Me option (you need only look so far as my where to find mommy and me clothes post to know that I’m not giving up any time soon) that Zenchies has, too. Don’t worry, mamas: you’ll find a separate listing later for the grownup scrunchies, made by this Canadian company.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Star Wars The Child Animatronic Edition
Why do I love it? Smaller than the “Baby Yoda” featured below, this version is FULL of bells and whistles. He can stand all on his own and is a convincing stand-in for Mandalorian fans, with body parts that move and a range of phrases. You simply touch the top of The Child’s head to activate more than 25 sound and motion combinations — like happy giggles and excited babbles while its head moves up and down, ears go back and forth and eyes open and shut. Parents, rejoice: lay The Child down and it will close its eyes and take a “Force nap.”

Why do I love it? Just can’t get enough of this guy! The Child toy plush is nearly a foot tall and has a soft body, but it also has a sturdy base filled with beans, so it can sit up all on its own. This is great for cuddly kids and collectors alike.

When you’re ready to play inside, take the roof of the Sweet Treats Truck off and turn it into an ice cream sandwich table — complete with chocolate bar-shaped benches! This is a bit bigger and more complex set than I included for toddlers and your little one may need a helping hand here and there, but there is so much fun to be had making their very own sweets shop with the candy machine and peanut butter cup maker. It makes little pretend gummie bears, you guys! Adorbz!

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Rowenta IXEO
Why do I love it? We’ve been faithfully using an older Rowenta steamer for a good seven or eight years. We love that thing. And now Rowenta has gone one step farther and created a hybrid steamer/iron that knocks our old one out of the water. The IXEO is a one-stop-shop for your light ironing and steaming needs with the ultimate convenience: a board that tilts and locks into three positions, which means whether you need an upright steamer or a flat ironing board — or something in between — you’ve got it all in one machine. And that has saved considerable space in what will soon be our new laundry room, since we no longer need to store an ironing board and iron in there anymore. Rowenta has outdone itself with a 45-seconds-to-ready heat-up time and the built-in Smart Protect system means the temperature automatically adapts to any garment without any special settings. Big B’s favourite part is that the height is super adjustable and even towering at 6’6″, he’s able to find a comfortable position. Because I assure you: I am not doing his ironing.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Saul Good Gift Co. box
Why do I love it? Handcrafted in Toronto, these thoughtfully curated gift boxes come in a variety of price points and themes, ensuring family, friends or colleagues get a gift box perfectly suited to their tastes and your budget. Opening the Feels Like Home gift box was like getting something from a good friend who picked out things just for me: the luxury Turkish cotton throw that comes from Pokoloko in the Gatineau area of Quebec is of beautiful quality, while the yarrow and calendula soap from Hamilton and plum and gin jam from St. Catharines — both in Ontario — help spread the love across the local maker network. Raw Gibbs Honey from Vankleek Hill and Toronto’s Sloane Tea round out this lovely gift box. (Contents may vary based on availability.)

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Sennheiser RF stereo TV listening system from HearingLife Canada
Why do I love it? The Sennheiser SET 840-TV Infrared Stereo TV Listening System may be a mouthful, but it’s an incredibly thoughtful and generous gift for a loved one who suffers from hearing loss. And since nearly half of all Canadians 60+ have hearing loss, chances are you have someone in your life who needs to blast the TV or radio well above healthy levels just to understand their favourite programs. An RF stereo TV listening system allows for wireless home listening with excellent sound. Whether it’s to watch a TV show or listen to music, personal listening preferences are available at the push of a button. It can be connected directly to a TV, hi-fi system or radio. The receiver is extremely lightweight and even comfortable to wear for people with truly mangled ears like Big B (thank you, rugby) thanks to its flexible ear pads. Ergonomic controls with larger font make the 840-TV set very easy to use. HearingLife Canada is trusted by doctors and ENTs across the country and provides FREE hearing tests to every 60-and-older Canadian.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Kazmaleje KurPlus
Why do I love it? KAZMALEJE (pronounced “cosmology”) was started by sisters LaToya, LaTasha and LaTrice Stirrup to address “the styling and detangling needs for those of us with curly, coily, kinky hair!” Although I don’t have Black or any version of ethnic hair, I do have pretty unruly curls that take a LOT of conditioner and wet-combing to tame. So I can tell you that the KurPlus comb (the smaller one above without the handle) is something you want in your hair-tool arsenal if you struggle to comb through your curls. The KurPlus can help reduce the amount of hair breakage; allows you to detangle and section your hair all with the same tool; reduces detangling time and has wide enough teeth that cleaning out the extra hair and product is easy.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Choate Body products for men & women
Why do I love it? I’ma start with the Clarity Lemongrass & Eucalyptus Face & Body Scrub because it is GLORIOUS. It’s like a spa in a jar — from the way it smells to the way it performs. Plus, hello, you can use it on both your body AND face? Score. The Beau Beard Balm has landed on the beard-of-fame wall (Big B has tried a lot of beard products!) and the Smooth Body Butter should be called BUDDAH. It is SUPER rich and will absorb beautifully — once you warm it up in your hands first (take a nice glob and rub it between your fingers and/or palms); the hydration lasts ALL DAY.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Persik glove dusting mitt
Why do I love it? I know some of you have loved ones who would be DELIGHTED to get cleaning tools in their stockings (note: I am not that person and you really need to know your audience on this one.) Big B is the neat freak and therefore does quite a bit more than his share of cleaning. To say that he was impressed with the Persik glove dusting mitt is an understatement. All you do is add water and wipe. And it cleans anything, streak-free: furniture, countertops, appliances, screens, mirrors…you name it. We’ve used a few different “just add water” cleaning cloths over the years and this one is definitely our favourite. Er, his favourite.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Purdy’s Chocolates
Why do I love it? Did you know Purdy’s is Canadian and uses sustainable cocoa for its products, paying premium prices for it to ensure their farmer partners and co-ops can properly support their families’ livelihoods? Founder Richard Carmon Purdy started selling homemade chocolates in downtown Vancouver in 1907 and we’ve been fans for years. It’s not unusual (in normal times) for us to stop in the mall for a sweet treat at Purdy’s. And you can bet we’ll be noshing on Sweet Georgia Browns on Christmas morning. (Yes, absolutely, we eat chocolate first thing in the morning on Christmas Day!) The Dark Chocolate Favourites Box makes an awesome gift for any chocolate-lover in your life (pick me! pick me!) and my entire household was collectively SHOCKED that the Vegan Dark Chocolate Santa was indescernible from “regular” dark chocolate.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? NEST New York grapefruit candle & reed diffuser set
Why do I love it? It had me at grapefruit. I love anything citrus-scented and NEST New York always delivers on gorgeous, long-lasting fragrance and beautiful packaging. In fact, the reed diffuser bottle is so pretty that I still have one from last year — the contents of which are no longer — on display in my living room. With notes of pink pomelo grapefruit, lily of the valley and coriander blossom, this set will fill any room with hope and joy.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? L’Occitane Verveine Mandarine set
Why do I love it? This limited-edition set blends freshly peeled mandarin oranges with just the slightest hint of a campfire. Again with the citrus, I know…but I can’t help myself! This is heavenly. Containing Verbena Mandarin Melting Body Cream (150ml), Verbena Mandarin Whipped Hand Cream (30ml) and Verbena Mandarin Scented Soap (50g), it all comes ready to gift in a lovely L’Occitane Gift Box.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Alfred DB2-B deadbolt smart lock
Why do I love it? No more keys! We’ve set this up for our kids to be able to come and go from the mud room on their own, without worrying about hiding a key under a mat or rock. This is more of a novelty right now but as they get older, this is going to be GOLD. It was really easy to install and set up and we love that we can program a variety of codes into it so, for example, grandparents can have their own easy-to-remember PIN codes, too. It locks automatically after come and go, so you’ll never wonder if you locked the door. I’ve appreciated having it so when I go for a run and no one’s home, I don’t need to take keys with me. Rather use a key? No prob — it comes with those too. And since it’s powered by batteries, power outages aren’t an issue, but it also has an emergency micro USB power port just in case.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? LNDR athleisure holiday sets
Why do I love it? LNDR compression leggings and medium-impact sports bras, cofounded by a Canadian woman, have been my running gear of choice for years. I legitimately run better, farther, faster when I wear LNDR — as if it helps me continue to put one foot in front of the other to just keep going. And while this UK-based brand (that ships globally) makes ultra-cool athleisurewear, too, the real magic is in the quality of the anti-odour technical fabrics that wash like an actual dream year after year. I’ve never had a single piece of LNDR clothing pill or lose its shape. Ever. This season, you can buy a specially curated holiday set and receive a tote or gym bag (that are GOTS-certified 100% organic cotton, BTW..and a sweet $14.00 value) for free. Canadian customers — a heads up: you may find there are duty charges on your order…it’s hit or miss. So, which one are you…?
- the Powerhouse (this new “better than naked” fabric is like a second skin)
- the Revolutionist (I’m swooning over this new “carbon” colour)
- the (Sleek) Beast (my absolute fave running leggings EVAH!)
- the Rock (I have this bra and love the way it fits; see it on me here)

WHAT’S IT CALLED? DAZN subscription
Why do I love it? Let’s be really clear: *I* don’t love it. My husband loves it. I mean LOVES it. It gives him all the rugby he needs to feel whole, plus a huge variety of other sports that he says you just can’t get with cable alone. If you have a sports nut on your list this holiday season, well — you’re welcome. You just nailed it. In his own (few) words: “I love the fact that I can watch all of the Six Nations from at home or on any device that I own. Also, being able to watch any NFL game no matter where you live is great.”

WHAT’S IT CALLED? No Pong natural deodorant
Why do I love it? There aren’t a lot of natural deodorants on the market that work. That’s a fact. It’s even truer when you’re using them while working out. Put simply: No Pong works. And it’s 100 per cent paraben-, aluminium-, cruelty- and plastic-free. Although No Pong was founded in Australia, one of the owners is Canadian! You only need a little more than a pea-sized amount (more if you have hairy armpits — yes, I tested this out for you, too) and it’ll last all day, even the long ones. I like both the original and the low-fragrance options a lot and appreciate that, ultimately, they’re both very low on the fragrance scale AND the scents are unisex. Each tin should last about a month, and my absolute favourite thing about this product is that it ships FOR FREE, even if you only buy one.
How much is it? Original, $8.95; Low-fragrance (bicarb-free), $9.95

WHAT’S IT CALLED? knix sleep set
Why do I love it? I first featured the knix sleep set in my knixwear review post, and now it comes in this really pretty lilac colour! WHAT’S IT CALLED? Ancestry.com subscription
Why do I love it? I am fascinated by genealogy. I’ve spent hours trying to really dig into everything that’s available with an Ancestry.com subscription; and wow — with 20 billion archival documents from more than 80 countries available with the Global Deluxe Membership, I’ve got a long way to go. I did start a family tree that goes back to my grandparents’ generation. But with the world’s largest online genealogy database, I’ll also be able to look through the Canadian Census over the years, search digital archival records, and potentially find photos of our family members who have long passed. Passenger lists are available in some cases, too, meaning I may be able to track my Granny’s arrival from England. There’s even a genealogical self-help community of millions of members.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Truth Treatments Vita Mask
Why do I love it? Distributed by Truth Skin — owned by a mompreneur in Alberta — I wrote about my addiction to Truth Treatments in my professional skin care lines post. And one of my most favourite skin-care products of all time is the Vita Mask. It can be used as either a mask or you can leave it on all night after cleansing for a rich boost of hydration. With a blend of essential Vitamins A, C, D, E, and K; Bentonite clay that detoxifies and energizes skin; and oat extracts designed to soothe and reduce inflammation, this little jar is packed full of science.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Lazypants Ultra-Soft set
Why do I love it? This Canadian line’s original Niki sweatpants and Cooper oversized hoodie have gotten a makeover with the addition of a minky-fleece lining in the new Ultra-Soft collection. IT.IS.SO.WARM.AND.COZY! (Yes, I needed alllll that emphasis to make my point clear.) I am living in this right now and firmly believe it should be heralded as the 2020 national uniform of women everywhere. We deserve this level of comfort and luxury, my friends. I’ve been obsessed with Lazypants for about seven years and I splurge on a new pair every year. There’s no sweatpant that fits me better, and you can tailor your look by choosing different sizes (for example, this set pictured is me in a large, but I love buying an XL for a really oversized fit). Although I don’t have a discount code for you, Lazypants’ Cyber Monday deal is pretty sweet: 35 per cent off merchandise, 40 per cent off gift cards and a free Lazy mask with any purchase. WHAT’S IT CALLED? Sporting Life gift card
Why do I love it? One of my favourite stores — even before I realized how outdoorsy I was — is Sporting Life. It is SO much more than “just sporting goods,” and this time of year it’s the perfect place to do your online holiday shopping. Whether you’re splurging on a fabulous parka for yourself (I’m not the only one who puts things under the tree for herself, right?); looking for the latest ski or snowboard equipment; want the best winter accessories for your kids so they can build snowmen, make snow angels and toboggan without worrying about the cold; or you’re trying to find the coolest designer sneaks for the person on your list who already has everything…Sporting Life has it all. The best gift you can give someone like me (see: “particular”) is a gift card so I can choose what I want, what I really really want; I’d probably use this $100 gift card to get a new pair of Lazypants! P.S. You can buy online, pick-up in-store or do curbside pick-up — so many options for whatever makes you feel the most comfortable.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? WHOOSH! Screen Shine Go XL
Why do I love it? I first found WHOOSH! Screen Shine in the tech area of my local WINNERS a few years back and gave it to Big B as a stocking stuffer. He used up every last drop and we have been screen-cleaner loyalists ever since. So when WHOOSH! sent us a basket of other goodies a few months ago, I was surprised to see how the line had evolved (with big cloths for TVs and even packaged wet wipes that you can keep in your purse). There are so many messy fingers touching every screen in the house, especially since we’re home far more than we’ve ever been, that I’ve resorted to keeping WHOOSH! cleaners and cloths on every floor — and that’s because it works. One quick spritz-and-a-wipe and your screens will be a streak-free dream again. DISCOUNT CODE: MOMGEAR5 (gives you $5 off with a minumum spend of $20; doesn’t stack with other offers and expires December 31, 2020, at 11:59 pm ET).

WHAT’S IT CALLED? HayU subscription
Why do I love it? As I was setting off for a flight to Ireland in March 2019, my trip-mates were chatting about their long lineup of Real Housewives downloads they’d prepared for the journey. As an unapologetic, long-time Real Housewives fan, I had to know how they managed to find these downloadable episodes. HayU. Think of it as Netflix for reality TV. And not just every single Real Housewives franchise from around the world, but other goodies like Below Deck, Vanderpump Rules, Botched, WAGS, Love Island, Southern Charm and more Kardashian Kontent than you ever asked for. You don’t need to wait to stream the current season because HayU brings it to you — commercial-free — as soon as the newest episodes are out. This is the kind of TV gold I need in my life to completely disconnect from daily stress, and any reality TV junkie deserves this gift that keeps on giving. For the price of a latté, I’ve been a subscriber ever since that trip and it brings me more joy than a single cup of java ever could.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? SkinCeuticals Redensity Kit
Why do I love it? I used my first SkinCeuticals product nearly 20 years ago — a sunscreen — and after expanding my product knowledge doing research for my professional skin care lines roundup, I’ve been so impressed by how each product I’ve tried performs. The brand is currently offering a series of holiday gift boxes that offer some serious value, like this Redensity Kit that’s $70 less than if you bought each product separately. The whole kit is fantastic but I want to give a special shout-out to two of the products in it: the A.G.E. Eye Complex is my favourite eye cream to date — it’s super rich and the best hydrator my peepers have ever seen. SkinCeuticals’ serums are cult-worthy and the H.A. Intensifier is a hyaluronic must-have for aging skin. The whole thing comes beautifully packaged in a box that my kid quickly claimed to house Beyblades. Add a bow and you’re good to go.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Oak & Stone men’s terry sweater
Why do I love it? I wouldn’t call this a sweater, so much as a long-sleeved T. But it does have a very cozy backside to the fabric (which sits so nicely against the body) so maybe it’s more like a T-sweater-hybrid. Whatever we call it, this slim-fit silhouette is made for broad shoulders and a narrow waist and the sleeves are just slightly longer than a 3/4 length, giving it a little bit of an extra hipster vibe. Big B had no hope of getting into this, but he’s a true XXL and this only goes up to an XL. For a looser fit, though, size up for your man.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Magic Bag neck-to-back hot & cold pack
Why do I love it? I have been using Magic Bags for years and years, but before now I’d never had one that curved around my neck, dipped down into my upper back and could be used hot or cold. I love this thing! Especially because it’s Canadian! Sure, it may not be a tiny local maker in your community, but let’s not forget about all of the companies based here who are committed to making their products in Canada. This Magic Bag uses 100% cotton fabric that’s cut and sewn by hand and all Magic Bags are filled with organic Canadian grains — picked for their ideal release of moist heat, which penetrates muscles for faster pain relief. Set in tarnish-resistant 14K Premium Plated Brass, the Ankh Charm bracelet is an eye-catching piece of elevated costume jewelry. I just know if I was out and about, it would garner compliments left and right. The ankh symbol — sometimes referred to as the key of life — represents eternal life in Ancient Egypt. WHAT’S IT CALLED? Clippo face masks
Why do I love it? Alex is another Whitby-based small business owner whose Clippo line of double-layer, tightly-woven cotton face masks have adjustable ear elastics and the most comfortable pinchable nose band of any cotton masks we’ve tried (and we’ve tried A LOT). And because the cotton is pre-shrunk, YOU CAN THROW THESE IN THE DRYER! Alex’s quirky and often outspoken sense of humour shines through in her limited-edition fabric selections. Like using the F-bomb? There’s a mask for that. Can’t get enough of the Golden Girls? Slap ’em on your face. Want to show your pride? Done. Care to proudly display your feminism? Choose from prints like RBG and “Nevertheless, She Persisted.” Mask design and fit aside, the best best best part about buying a Clippo mask is that the company provides jobs for sewists to work from home for fair wages. WHAT’S IT CALLED? Fleece Feeder Holiday “Birders” Box from SHED Chetwyn Farm
Why do I love it? Remember those alpaca socks from the kids’ section? I told you I’d be sharing another awesome product from Chetwyn Farm in Prince Edward County. It’s the Fleece Feeder Holiday Birders Box and it’s just so interesting and unique that I couldn’t pass up adding it to this year’s gift guide. You don’t have to be an avid birder to appreciate this either; I actually think this would make the most beautiful gift to give an entire family. It contains one of the farm’s signature fleece feeders along with replacement fleece refills and suet cakes for bird-feeding. Simply hang the feeder on your balcony or in your yard and enjoy watching birds pull the little pieces of alpaca fleece to build their nests; and you can buy fleece replacement packs year after year and the birds will continue to return. WHAT’S IT CALLED? Graydon Skincare Full Moon Serum
Why do I love it? If you read my professional skin care lines post, you know that I extol the virtues of retinol. But not everyone can tolerate retinol well and many others simply prefer something plant-based and natural. Fullmoon Serum from Canadian skin-care line Graydon is the answer. This serum is a water-based retinol alternative that will help soothe and smooth, creating a more radiant complexion over time. While I don’t find the results as dramatic or immediate as a straight-up retinol, this is gentle enough to use nightly and never once dried out or irritated my somewhat sensitive skin. Dermatologist- and clinically tested, Fullmoon Serum contains ingredients like moth bean, hibiscus extract and malachite that work in concert to deliver a vegan, cruelty-free product that doesn’t contain SLS, sulphates, parabens, synthetic fragrances or petroleum. The bottle is quite small, but the price point reflects that.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Stainless Sea reusable, retractible straw

This straw retracts and comes in a cute bamboo case and also has its own dedicated cleaning tool. I’ve tried these eco-friendly straws before and have always had an issue getting them to slide open and closed nicely, but not with Stainless Sea! WHAT’S IT CALLED? Nobu + Ting wax wraps set
Why do I love it? My name is Andrea and I love beeswax wraps. I started using them last year and it has saved us from buying copious amounts of plastic wrap and plastic bags. The wax wraps sets from Nobu + Ting come in the prettiest patterns that have a distinctly Asian vibe. The wraps — called べたべた (which is pronounced “bet-a bet-a”) and means “sticky” in Japanese — come in different sizes, served as sets of three in patterns that complement each other beautifully. I love them because they help the planet — and they really work.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? BAO Laboratory Lotus Squalane Healing Facial Oil
Why do I love it? If you aren’t using a facial oil, I feel like you’re missing out on one of life’s greatest graceful-aging tools. I met a woman at a bar one night in Lake Placid a few years ago and when she told me she was nearly 60, I damn near fell off my barstool. She didn’t look much older than me (I was maybe 41 at the time). I begged her for her secret. “Face oils. Anything. Just slather oil on your face every day.” And that was that. I’ve been playing with different oils ever since. And this one from BAO Laboratory is a beautiful one — the way it absorbs into the skin is simply gorgeous. Suitable for sensitive, dehydrated and allergic-prone skin types, this calming facial oil can soothe redness and help repair skin. Squalane is a potent antioxidant and BAO blends it with lotux wax in this product, which has high levels of iron, linoleic acid, and vitamins C and B. Note that this may be moisturizing enough for some all on its own, but I found I still wanted to add a dedicated moisturizer over top of it. Created by a former chemist, this high-quality, Canadian-made oil makes the perfect unisex stocking stuffer.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Zenchies scrunchies
Why do I love it? I’m a sucker for a good animal print. And here we are again with Zenchies, who deliver with a pair of fun animal-print scrunchies! This is the Wild Ones Duo and these scrunchies are a bit thinner than some of the brand’s other ones, which is nicer for people with thinner hair and for those of us who spend a lot of time wearing a scrunchy as a bracelet. Created by Canadian hairstylist-turned-yogi Samantha Thom using luxurious and/or eco-friendly fabrics, Zenchies are locally handmade and a gentler alternative than a regular hair elastic.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Handmade charcuterie boards by The Craftsmen’s Daughter
Why do I love it? What’s not to love about a gorgeous live-edge piece of wood fashioned into something that displays a selection of delectable meats, cheeses, fruits and crackers? #YUMazing. There’s nothing like a charcuterie board for a party (when we can have those again) and this Clarington Region mom — who pays homage to her late father with every woodworking project — plays with a variety of techniques to produce one-of-a-kind, heirloom-quality boards in any size or style your meat-and-cheese dreams can muster.
How much is it? Prices vary based on size, epoxy and customization. Examples shown include the long $150 river board, large cherry board with epoxy inlay for $130 and — my personal favourite — the “f-ing delicious” board for $85.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Jojoba & Apricot Emollient Body Oil from Buff Experts
Why do I love it? Created by an African-Canadian who identifies as a Habesha woman, Sina Zere is fascinated by the flora and fauna of her heritage — think guava, aloe, prickly pear, honey, sesame and coffee; the kind of plants and ingredients that have been the source of African women’s beauty routines for centuries. I just have to say this about the Jojoba & Apricot Emollient Body Oil: IT. SMELLS. CRAZY. GOOD. It goes on like a dream, too, and anyone who suffers from dry winter skin would be wise to keep this handy and get it on your damp body within a couple of minutes of getting out of the shower. That tight, itchy wintery skin? Fuggedaboudid.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Autism Mother Jigsaw Puzzle necklace from MissFit Boutique
Why do I love it? It’s a job I don’t know if I could ever do, and it’s certainly not one you could ever prepare yourself for, and yet I watch friends rise to the occasion and find the joy and gifts that come with parenting autistic children — even through the challenges. This card-and-necklace combo allows for message customization and I think it would be so lovely to recognize the beauty in how moms fight for their kids. The necklace comes in a variety of finishes and lengths so you can make this just right for someone special.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? love eddi Hanukkah-inspired curated gift set
Why do I love it? This Greater Toronto Area-based small business was borne out of two moms who shared a maternity leave — the “eddi” part of their business name combines their babies’ names, Addison and Elizabeth — and has flourished into a thriving small business curating luxury gift sets for new parents. And, no, it’s not just for Hanukkah gifts (I just really wanted to try and make this HOLIDAY gift guide as inclusive as possible). Each gift set comes with a collection of must-have baby items from coveted brands, consciously packaged in a premium reusable bag with a handwritten card. Some of them, like this “hello maccabi” set, even come with something for mom! And you can select add-on gifts so something arrives for older siblings as well. I am what you call particular or…discerning. Or sometimes just a downright snob (I admit it! I’m very self-aware). The love eddi sets get a huge stamp of approval from me and are worth every penny.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Thorpe Toys Bug Box
Why do I love it? Based in Waterloo, Ontario, Thorpe Toys was founded the year I was born. So it’s old, y’all. Specializing in well-priced hand-crafted wooden toys, I saw this Bug Box and thought it was such a distinctly different kind of children’s gift than I have ever featured before. In the warmer months, your kid can explore the great outdoors and get a closer view of his or her favourite insects, big or small. I love how it’s finished with a leather handle to make it easy for your child to carry around this portable entomology laboratory. Don’t forget to teach kindness for all living things and be sure this is used purely for temporary observation. You just need to leave the box outside, open the little door and insects can easily escape and go back to nature. DISCOUNT CODE: MommyGearestROCKS. (This provides my readers with a 10% discount on all toys with a minimum purchase of $20; available until December 20, 2020, at 11:59 pm ET. Please note that Thorpe Toys is running Toy of the Day specials — unfortunately, you can only use one discount or deal per checkout.)

WHAT’S IT CALLED? True North Toque by 98 Hearts Crafting
Why do I love it? I’ve had one of Laura’s cozy toques for a couple of years, and aside from knowing it was made just for me, I love how warm it is and that the pom-pom is interchangeable! Coming at you from the Niagara Region, these hand-crocheted True North Toques are a quintessentially Canadian must-have. WHAT’S IT CALLED? The Active Reader literacy cards
Why do I love it? Ideal for pre- and very early readers, this literacy set has the most tactile cards I’ve ever felt. Thick cardstock with a satiny texture and raised lettering, they feel great in your and your kids’ hands. Founded by Robyn and Rebecca, The Active Reader is the brainchild of this teacher and literacy expert duo. Early in her career, Robyn identified a major gap in the area of foundational literacy education and it has been her mission to help children read and write ever since. The Toddler Kit, shown here, comes with 30 multi-sensory cards. In addition to upper and lowercase letters, arrows show the direction of how to write each letter and there are research-driven activities (like recipes, crafts and “field trips”) inspired by each letter, too, that brings it to life and helps reinforce it. WHAT’S IT CALLED? Mi Beauty products
Why do I love it? This small Toronto beauty brand, Mi Beauty has brought my lashes back to life! I have been a diehard lash extension wearer for years but the COVID put a swift end to that back in March. I’ve read plenty of reviews about magnetic lashes since then and am pleased to introduce a Canadian company that makes some that actually work! The Attraction Eyeliner goes on like any liquid liner — so if you can apply that, you can apply this. I loved how easy it was to add the Faux Mink Lashes to my eyes, and they really stayed on all day! You’ll need a good makeup-removing oil and some elbow grease to remove the eyeliner but the lashes came off very easily and I’m excited to reuse them over and over — without having to remove any glue from them like I did before extensions came into my life. The Lash & Brow Serum has been easy to apply and in just a week I noticed stronger lashes; it’ll be interesting to see if they lengthen over time, too. The handmade Gettin’ Lippy Lip Plumping Gloss is a lightly plumping gloss that’s ideal for people who like the look of temporarily fuller lips but don’t like the stinging that usually comes with it. I’m freaking out over the crystal-infused Prism Gloss in this stunning turquoise colour, though (I’m wearing it in the pic so you can see it’s quite sheer) — and it comes with an Aquamarine crystal and courage card.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Wabanaki Maple whiskey-barrel syrup
Why do I love it? The Indigenous Peoples of the First Nations harvested the savoury sap from the maple trees long before we stole their land from them. Not only am I proud to feature an Indigenous-owned Canadian company, but — no lie — this whiskey-aged syrup is the bomb. (I was going to write the “bomb dot com” but quickly realized it’s not 2004.) Wabanaki Maple is located in New Brunswick on Neqotkuk (Tobique First Nation). Harvested, boiled and refined with techniques dating back generations, and enriched with the smoky flavours of wood and rye whiskey — which cuts the sweetness factor and leaves you with a richer syrup flavour profile — we can’t get enough of this stuff. Now, there is 2% alcohol remaining in it, so keep that in mind if you prefer not to have alcohol in your or your kids’ bodies. We can tell you from frequent quality-assurance testing that the Wabanaki syrup pairs incredibly well with both glutenous and gluten-free pancakes and also makes a very fine Paleo-friendly sweetener for your coffee.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Cool Canvas Co. personalized canvas
Why do I love it? Created by two Toronto-area women, Randi and Vivian, Cool Canvas Co. delivers a custom canvas that grandparents will treasure and kids may fight over after they’re long grown. Randi — a graphic designer for 25 years — started a small personalized greeting card business once her children were born. After starting a new chapter of her life, Vivian’s new blended family wanted something that cemented them together symbolically, so Randi helped her design something with all of the step-kids’ names and birthdates in one place. As soon as friends and family saw it, the idea spiralled and Cool Canvas Co. was born. DISCOUNT CODE: Mommy15 (gets you an extra 15% off sitewide; valid until December 31, 2020, at 11:59 pm ET).

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Pillow Slipcovers by artist Darlene Kulig
Why do I love it? Canadian artist Darlene Kulig makes myriad products featuring her signature prints, like these whimsical pillow slip covers, which will be in Canadian Embassies in 2021 — and of course your home, too. Printed and sewn in Mississauga, Ontario, on polyester using water-based inks, these 18×18″ beauties will liven up any space and create a wonderful conversation-starter. To me, Darlene’s semi-abstract spirited landscapes are like modern-day Group of Seven, representing much of Canada in her work. A portion of proceeds go to The Craig Kulig Memorial Fund to help fund cancer research at the Ottawa Hospital. DISCOUNT CODE: FREE MASK (type the code after your name and Darlene will add a free Polypropolene Fine Art Face mask to your order; value of $25.00. Ends December 31, 2020, at 11:59 pm ET.)

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Kori Artisan Nakiri 8″ chef’s knife by House of Knives
Why do I love it? This is every at-home chef’s dream gift! The hand-forged, professional-level artisan Kori Artisan knife comes packaged so beautifully you won’t even need to wrap it. Designed by the Canadian couple who own House of Knives — so they know knives, people! — it took two years to perfect the Nakiri, the ultimate fusion knife. The idea was to marry the beauty and sharpness of Japanese knives with the durability and utility of German knives; it takes more than 60 steps to produce a single Kori Artisan knife. We own some pretty sweet (German) knives, but we’ve never had anything that can slice paper-thin cuts of cucumber or ginger — even grapes! And its shape is perfect for transferring your diced veg from cutting board to pan. As your kitchen king or queen opens his or her gift, gently whisper: “each blade features a Japanese VG10 core, surrounded by 36 layers of hammered steel to create a beautiful, layered Damascus pattern. Finished with a riveted canvas micarta handle for ultimate comfort and durability.” Then demand they cook for you for life.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Vancouver Candle Co. Muskoka candle & reed diffuser
Why do I love it? Started in Vancouver in 2014, the Vancouver Candle Co. specializes in artisanal candles and diffusers using traditional methods, using the best-quality ingredients available such as premium soy wax, pure cotton wicks, natural essential oils and perfume-grade fine fragrance. Every product is hand-crafted and comes luxuriously packaged. Some iconic neighbourhoods may have their own signature scent in one of the collections — like Gastown or Yorkville — or you can gift one of your besties a set to remind her of her childhood swimming and playing in Muskoka. And let me tell you, it smells like quintessential Muskoka — with very clear notes of pine and cedar. The boxed candle has a whopping 60 hours of burn time in it and the scent diffuser lasts for three months. DISCOUNT CODE: mommygearest15 (15% off until December 15, 2020, at 11:59 p.m. ET).

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Domestic Objects handmade campfire from Domestic Objects
Why do I love it? The “Happy Camper” felt campfire is an adorable set for toddlers through big kids who still have a thirst for imaginative play. Featuring a three-sided fire that stands up on its own, this set also comes with three large and six small stuffed granite rocks and two jumbo marshmallows at the end of felt-covered roasting sticks — and it’s bigger than it appears online! Once it’s set up, it’s actually about a foot-and-a-half-wide. It comes in its own drawstring bag, making it easy to store and take along with you when play dates are back on the calendar. Designed with love in Vancouver, Domestic Objects is best known for its magnificent play tents.

2020 holiday gift guide: family card and board games
WHAT’S IT CALLED? Kids Against Maturity
Why do I love it? My kids went bananas for this game! I’d say this is the family-friendly answer to Cards Against Humanity and as long as your child can read well independently, s/he should be fine to play. Miss Q, who will be 10 soon, needed a couple of explanations along the way with certain words and phrases but was able to participate really well overall. The K Man won the entire game the first time we played — this was SO up his alley! The original set comes with 500 cards, and with several expansion packs available, the fun can go on and on and on.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Chromino
Why do I love it? If you like dominoes but want an alternative or something easier for kids to play, consider Chromino, which is short for “chromatic domino.” There are a few ways to play — easier for junior players to expert for the smarty-pants who want to level up — and depending on which method you use, the game can move quickly. Miss Q really got into this game and I thought the strategy element was really good for revving up some brain power. Would play again!

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Dixit
Why do I love it? Dixit is such a beautifully illustrated game! You take turns being the “storyteller” and, based on a card you select from the set in your hands, you create a sentence, say a single word or even just make a sound that goes with it. Then, all of the other players put down a card from their hands that matches the storytellers word(s) or sound. Everyone gets to vote which card best embodies the storyteller’s word(s)/sound and points are allotted based on guessing the right card or having others guess YOUR card. Adorable wooden rabbits move around a whimsical game board and it moves quickly enough that even the youngest players won’t get restless.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? UNO Showdown
Why do I love it? If you and your kids already love the classic UNO game, get ready for a whole pile of extra fun with UNO Showdown! Our kiddos beg to play this game, which essentially works just like the original with the added bonus of a unit that allows two players to have a “showdown” — complete with timer and countdown sound effects. I love that you can store your cards in the base of the unit, too.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Catan
Why do I love it? Although the box says Catan is for those age 10+, I’d say it’s more appropriate for 14+ and teens/adults who are into strategy, engineering, history and/or economics. It’ll teach and challenge problem solving skills and makes an outstanding game to hone negotiation and bartering techniques. Note that it will take you quite a bit of time to work through how to play the game and learn the various nuances. Like Monopoly, it could take days to find a winner — so don’t set up your game where you eat. What makes this especially interesting is that the game can be different every time you play based on a variety of factors, keeping big thinkers guessing and re-envisioning their strategies with each new game.

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Clue Liars Edition Board Game
Why do I love it? Truth be told, I didn’t open this up and play it with my kids. I’m saving it to put it under our own darn tree, OK?! And that’s because Clue was my very, absolutely, most definite favourite game of all time from childhood. This takes a new twist on the classic; players use “Investigation cards” to help them figure out who killed Mr. Boddy in the mansion, picking out a card and reading it out loud with the intentions of convincing other players that they’re telling the truth — even if they’re not. There’s even a Liar Button you can slam when you suspect someone’s fibbing. I am so excited to bring the world of Clue back into my life! I mean my kids’ lives. Yeah, that’s it…

WHAT’S IT CALLED? Ultimate Catch Phrase
Why do I love it? Miss Q isn’t quite ready for this one (it is rated 12+ for a reason), because you have to think on your feet — fast. She gets a bit too flustered without having those extra years of knowledge at the ready. And don’t worry if you already owned previous Catch Phrase games — Ultimate Catch Phrase boasts 5,000 words never seen before with categories that include: Around the World, Fun and Games, On the Air, Snack Time and The Great Outdoors.

Turned out to be the gift they were most excited for, so those gorgeous ALPACA THERMAL TERRY SOCKS FROM SHED CHETWYN FARM makes the list too.

Wow, so many amazing gifts. My eye went to starwars the child first as missing disney and the kids are mandalorian crazy. Then uno showdown a game that I loved with a new twist to share with the kids on family game nights. Lastly I chose the saul good gift co box as I cannot say no to a box of beautiful items and can’t always be just about the kids. Great feature of businesses!

My top 3 gifts would be: the NEST NEW YORK GRAPEFRUIT CANDLE & REED DIFFUSER SET because I love both grapefruit and Nest, the ALFRED DB2-B DEADBOLT SMART LOCK because it would make so much safer and easier for the family, and the SAUL GOOD GIFT CO. BOX because it seems to have something for everyone and I could share it with friends and family!
