The movie: Barbie The Pearl Princess
When it was available: March 11, 2014
What it’s about: One part The Little Mermaid, one part Tangled and all parts glittery-pink-Barbie, The Pearl Princess stars Lumina, a mermaid who doesn’t know she’s a princess. Lumina has magical powers that change the colour of pearls and make them dance and glow (and even entrap electric eels and other evil-doers). She can also whip up a mean Victorian-esque hairstyle with the flick of a finger. Lumina and her best friend Kuda, a pink seahorse, swim off to a majestic mer-kingdom with a misplaced invitation in-hand; there, she helps some new friends prepare for the Royal Ball. Lumina ultimately discovers that her magical pearls (and, yes, her pearl necklace — but don’t go there…) unlock her destiny as heiress to the kingdom.
What Miss Q said: “The best part is when they all fight. And then she becomes the princess. And the bad guys go away.” (Even The K Man sat through the whole movie and quite liked it…though he wanted me to be sure I didn’t tell his friends.)
The verdict? While Princess & The Pop Star remains Miss Q’s favourite Barbie movie, she did enjoy The Pearl Princess and if your little princess usually likes the Barbie flicks, she’ll like this one, too.
