The CD: Block Party! by Poochamungas
When it’s available: October 8, 2013
What it’s like: You’ll be impressed when you hear the Block Party CD and later learn that it’s the masterpiece of a firefighter dad who learned to play the guitar at 30. The songs are reminiscent of — you guessed it — a neighbourhood block party. (Unless, that is, if you’re in my neighbourhood where we all hired babysitters or sent our kids to grandma’s for the night so we could do keg stands like teenagers.)
Full of upbeat tracks with lots of sing-a-long-ability (totally a word), Block Party! does a good job of holding my kids’ interest for the first half of the tracks, but they usually request Space Chums or Squishy Banana when the latter half kicks in.
The lyrics are kid-friendly and the voices are easy on the ear. If I didn’t know the band was from Chicago, I would guess that it’s a group from Down East who got together thanks to a good, old-fashioned Canadian kitchen party, with everyone just having a grand time around a circle of extended family and friends.
The verdict? I wouldn’t race out to buy it, but I’d be thankful if someone gave it to my kids as a gift.
