Aeroplan members rejoice!
The time has come. The time is now.
This is the kind of announcement that long-time Aeroplan members have been waiting for: starting Friday, you can fly CASH-FREE.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN EXACTLY?
Well, you know when you book a flight using your Aeroplan Miles and you have to pay those pesky taxes and other surcharges? Not. Any. More.
As of April 1, 2016, you can use your miles to cover everything — the flight and all related taxes, fees and surcharges.
This is what you do:
- Visit aeroplan.com (and, coming soon, Aeroplan’s mobile app — which, incidentally, remembers you every time you re-open the app, so there’s no need to keep imputing your membership number over and over and over and over again).
- When you’re prompted about payment option choice, select “Pay all with miles” to cover everything with your miles instead of your wallet.
- Snicker wildly to yourself about your cash‑free flight.
- Brag (the old-fashioned way: telling your mother who will tell everyone else; the new-fashioned way: post on Facebook).
The best part is that you can choose to fly cash-free using both the Fixed Mileage and Market Fare options — both of which I explain in this post about Aeroplan flight-booking tips.
Now, don’t go thinking that you can go back in time and use this awesome new perk to recoup the fees you paid on an existing booking. No can do. Time travel doesn’t fly, homey (see what I did just there?).
But look at it this way… it’s just another perfect excuse to book a trip somewhere fabulous.

That is great news and glad the option exists for those that want to take advantage.

I had no idea they did that now. I haven’t used or looked at my Aeroplan in a long while, I should review it.

It takes a while for the points to build up but it is well worth it.

Without checking the details I presume that the fees will be redeemed at $.01 per point. (or less?) In my view this is a very poor way to pay for the fees as value received per point is much less than using the points for the flight itself. And if you pay the fees on your card you get 2X points. Since I value points more than cash I think this does not work for me. However, some people earn so many points that this is great news. And some have just enough points for the one flight and taxes and don’t see any earning potential in the future so this would be good for them.
