THE PRODUCTS
Sensible Foods’ Crunch Dried Cherry Berry Snacks and Glenny’s Organic Brown Rice Marshmallow Treats (Chocolate).
THE GOOD
Both products are certified organic.
The Marshmallow Treats contain nine whole grains in every bar, which is pretty impressive for something that’s so kid-friendly in terms of taste and presentation.
You’ll be able to pronounce every ingredient, and you won’t mind serving either snack to your kids – although the Marshmallow Treats – with seven grams of sugar per bar – are definitely in the “treat” category so we indulge only in moderation.
The dried fruit package is currently priced at $3.49 for two. Pretty reasonable – just keep in mind that one bag is really only one serving for one person.
Both snacks were tasty. The Glenny’s bars were chocolate-y and not too sweet, and the consistency of marshmallow to rice cereal much better than the time I unsuccessfully tried to make my own organic brown rice “krispy” squares, which ended up the consistency of rocks. The dried fruit chips – since there isn’t anything added to them – are quite tart…though I like that sort of thing.
THE GAFFE
As I write this, the Glenny’s bars are buy one get one free, which comes in at $9.99 for two boxes. There are five bars per box, so this is about $1 per bar – far pricier than our regular brand of organic snack bars we pack in school lunches. And when this two-for-one deal ends, that’ll work out to $2 per bar. No chance I would ever spend that much. Not even for rice treats that are softer on the teeth than rocks.
“May contain fruit pits.” So says the label on the bag from Sensible Foods. And ’tis true; I crunched on an apple “pip” as my Granny would have called it, which could have been a problem had my two year old been eating it instead. As a result, I wouldn’t recommend this for really little kids.
