THE PRODUCT
The NOVOshield Mattress Protector.
THE GOOD
- It has a breathable membrane backing – eliminating those horrible night-sweats that plastic mattress protectors create
- It has a terry cloth surface, which not only makes it a bit more cushion-y than some other mattress protectors, but also helps keep your kid’s sheets in place
- The manufacturer claims it protects against dust mites, allergens, bed bugs and pet dander; I’m beyond thrilled to report that I have no clue if we would be otherwise susceptible to these…or, at least three of the four, since we don’t have pets. I pray that I never ever know what it’s like to have bed bugs (shudder…itch)
- It goes in the washer and dryer and has maintained its shape and effectiveness throughout several washings
- At about $45 for the double size, the price point is very good
- The NOVOshield Mattress Protector is waterproof for the first few months (ahem, see gaffes!), which is a MUST in my house for my daytime potty-trained kids who still sometimes wet overnight diapers past the leaking point. And its waterproof-ness was thoroughly tested on several occasions where The K Man must have guzzled a litre of milk right before bedtime — it worked well. At first…
THE GAFFE
- But before the first year of use was up, the NOVOshield mattress pad was no longer waterproof. It was like using an extra fitted sheet made of cotton, and if we continued to use it, there’s no question our kids’ expensive mattresses would be ruined. So, back we went and bought another Naturepedic mattress protector instead (which costs a lot more, but our first one is still 100 per cent waterproof after more than five years of use!)
- It’s not organic and there’s no organic option; this is probably not an issue for many of you but we have organic mattresses for our kids, so putting a non-organic mattress protector on an organic mattress is silly. We therefore consider the NOVOshield Mattress Protector our “extra” when our organic mattress protectors are in the wash

Gotta be honest here, when I first saw this post I thought these would be way too expensive for the average household…$45 for a double is totally manageable though!

Yes! I thought it was a really good price, too!
