I know it’s crazy, but I like my kids to look just as adorable when they’re asleep in bed as they do during the day.
There’s just something about seeing them run around our second floor in cute little jammies – trying desperately to extend the bedtime routine by jumping on beds, chasing each other, wrestling and diving into Miss Q’s massive sheepskin rug – that gets me every time.
It’s somehow easier to take the odd night-waking, night-wetting and why-are-you-standing-at-the-foot-of-my-bed-before-sunrise visit when my kids are extra-cute. And, yes, a great pair of PJs makes them extra extra-cute.
You know from many of my safe sleep reviews (such as Playjamas, ergoPouch or Soma Organic) why it’s important to consider going organic at night. And if an organic mattress or even a pillow is too much of a financial strain, then perhaps pyjamas are a more cost-effective start down the organic path.
I think it’s helpful to have several organic PJ reviews available to you because like all apparel brands, sizing simply isn’t standard, and people’s tastes differ widely. So this is the second of three brands I’ll review as this safe sleep series starts to come to a close.
Allow me to introduce you to Skylar Luna, who generously sent a pair of PJs each for Miss Q and The K Man. Let’s do this!
THE GOOD
Right out of the bag: Softest. Pjyamas. Ever. When the Skylar Luna organic PJs arrived (each in a little co-ordinating drawstring pouch of their own, at that), my jaw dropped they were so buttery soft. I made Big B feel them. I made my mom feel them. I told stories of their softness to friends and neighbours. If you’re a tactile person and spend more time touching clothes in stores than trying them on, you’ll really appreciate how soft these are.
Nearly true-to-size fit. My kids are on the taller side, and when we first started testing these jammies, Miss Q was about 20 months old and fit into the size 2 perfectly, with The K Man – nearing 4.5 years old – wearing the size 5 like a champ. We also find with some two-piece pyjamas that we get crop-top action; my babies inherited their dad’s long torso and with the Skylar Luna PJs, I am glad to report that their belly buttons are not in full view. That said, I’m a big fan of buying jammies one size too big and rolling up the cuffs to get two years of wear out of them.
Super-snug fit but easy to get on and off – no issues with a tight neck hole or fabric that won’t slide over small, unco-operative hands.
Chemical-free, 100 per cent organic cotton. Boom.
The collection is available in the same great designs, year-round. So if you find a favourite this year, chances are good that you’ll be able to buy the next size up when you need to without shrieking that it’s sooo last season.
Flat seams – inside and out. So if you have a child with tactile issues, these could work well (save for the one tag on the bottoms with no other information than “100% organic cotton.”
Available from size 12-18 months all the way up to 8T. (I would buy a pair for myself in a heartbeat if they came in a 37T, which is my clever way of admitting my age but not my size.)
I think the $39 price tag for the long-sleeved PJs is totally fair for a premium product. These are unbelievably high-quality jammies.
I wash these in a cold (but not delicate) cycle and have been putting them in the dryer (on low) for three months. There’s been zero shrinkage. They come out looking and feeling pretty darn great – every time.
THE GAFFE
Skylar Luna’s organic cotton does pill over time, and – as a result – lose their ridiculous softness. Despite this, they’re still better than any pair of non-organic jammies.
Made in China. I’m sure there are wonderful factories in China where wages are fair and humanitarian needs are met, but when I purchase premium brands for premium dollars, I like it when they’re made closer to home.

so what would be your most recommended brand for organic PJs that’s manufactured closer to home?

Hi Joyce! I would definitely recommend Playjamas. They’re organic, designed in Toronto and I believe made (ethically!) in Turkey. My daughter is now wearing my son’s that he’s outgrown — they’re a big hit.

I love organic pjs for my boys! I’ve read and re-read the warnings about clothes and pjs that are ‘flame resistent’ its really scary that people will put those items on thier children, or wear them themselves! Thanks for posting this!

I *believe* it’s just the looser-fitting PJs that have the flame-retardant chemicals on them. I am not entirely sure if the snug-fit non-organic ones are required to in Canada. That said, non-organic fabrics will still off-gas, so organic still wins.
