Snug Organics’ 100% Organic Cotton Sherpa Sleeper #SafeSleep

We had dinner with my in-laws on Saturday night and Big B’s mom was telling me how she managed to find a pair of Angry Birds pyjamas for The K Man for Christmas. She said, “they aren’t a nice material at all but they were impossible to find here in Canada – I got them in New York State.”

This was a difficult conversation, because I know that “not a nice material” means chemically treated polyester, since polyester is plastic and plastic is flame-happy and the two don’t mix when it comes to sleeping children.

My son will go ballistic for these. He’s an Angry Birds fanatic these days and is obsessed with everything featuring those crazy birds with no feet. (Have you ever noticed none of them have feet?!)

And I will go along with it, because it’s Christmas and the thought was a lovely one they aren’t returnable anyway and grandparents are not required to purchase only items of which mommy and daddy approve. If that was the case, grandparents wouldn’t get to be grandparents.

But I will still cringe a little every time he puts them on.

In this second-last review in my safe sleep series, I’ll encourage you to share this with the grandparents in your kids’ lives – because with a $58 price tag, they are definitely in the gift zone. Hopefully by the end of this post, however, you’ll agree that they’re definitely worth considering if you live in a country where the temperatures drop dramatically in winter.

Meet Snug Organics and its organic Sherpa Sleeper. I received a pair to test with each of my kids for the purposes of this review.

THE GOOD

The 3T Sherpa Sleeper on my then-21 month old (29 lbs & tall).

Canadian winters get pretty chilly and there’s something about wearing cozy PJs that makes it palatable. Snug Organic’s Sherpa Sleeper is the ultimate in cozy warmth. It’s as thick and warm as fleece but made of organic cotton – not polyester.

The fit errs on the side of generous. Snug Organics sent me a size 3T for Miss Q and a size 5T for The K Man. I had to roll up Miss Q’s cuffs at the wrists and ankles and her Sherpa Sleeper is still extremely roomy. She very comfortably wears a 3T in some brands, including Joe Fresh and Ralph Lauren, so I’d say this sizing is more on par with H&M. The K Man’s sleeper fits like a glove, with a nice long torso – which is where we normally run into trouble with him – and a bit of room to grow.

I love a one-piece PJ with a zipper. LOVE. Snaps are not your friend.

The Sherpa Sleeper only comes in a unisex colour – cream with green cuffs. You can choose from a turquoise or yellow zipper, but both are perfectly fine for girls or boys. This means you can pass these jammies down from brother to sister or vice versa without any embarrassment. Plus, this makes $58 look a whole lot better when you consider that they can be worn by more kids down the road.

The quality is just spectacular. They are thick and so well made and pay attention to comfort with a stretchy ribbed cotton “band” down each side of the sleeper’s body.

How do I write this delicately and without embarrassing my future teenager…? If you have a young boy who has a tendency to play with the, uh, family jewels while he’s sleeping, and in doing so he manages to move his nighttime diaper around enough that it no longer does its job, and in doing so he manages to pee everywhere, then a one-piece sleeper might be the answer. We’re always in a hurry to get The K Man’s Sherpa Sleeper through the wash cycle because they’re his only one-piece PJs (primarily because of the torso issue), and thereby the only pair of pyjamas that prevent him from getting at said family jewels. They keep an overnight diaper in place perfectly. Reliably. Every time.

I plan to use our Sherpa Sleepers as long underwear under snowsuits this winter, so in my mind, these have a double function. (Also helping improve price per wear.)

The three- and six-month-old sizes come with feet! That means you can put your baby in a blanket-free crib and trust that she’ll be warm should you forego a sleep sack (or pair it only with a maximum 1.0 tog Grobag or ergoPouch).

Made in Denver, Colorado (they understand winter like a Canadian!), of GOTS-certified organic cotton – no bad stuff.

THE GAFFE

These are especially slim-fitting sleepers to comply with snug-fit requirements, so be mindful that if your child is a more-than-average weight, these are going to be tricky to zip up without catching skin. Use the sizing chart if you have any doubt about which size to order.

No dryer action for Snug Organics’ Sherpa Sleeper. I know it’s slightly hypocritical to want to put everything in an energy-sucking dryer, but we parents do a lot of laundry, darnit! While I often test the laundering boundaries to write a really fulsome review, the company owner said in no uncertain terms – on three separate occasions – that I must not put the sleepers in the dryer. So I didn’t. Not even for you. I did shirk orders and wash the sleepers in a normal cycle rather than just delicate – they were fine. You will notice shrinkage after the first wash (on cold only!) – which gives the Sherpa Sleeper that snug fit – but then not again. Unless you want to press your luck. Let me know how that works out.

Only available to size 5T. Why? WHY?

I’m not gonna lie, $58 is steep. There’s something about surpassing the $40 mark for PJs that hurts a little. I do believe they’re worth it if you can pass them down or will also use them as a thermal layer, but you have to get past the sticker shock for sure.
