Two years ago, I posted a review of Tieks ballet flats. It’s been read nearly 20,000 times and I wish I knew how many people bought a pair based on my recommendation.
Here we are two years later and I’m still touting Tieks. I’ve got four pairs now, and I’m already dreaming of my fifth.
Why? They are, hands down, the most amazing flats I own. And I’m a bit of a shoe hoarder, so I’ve got a lot to work with for comparison’s sake.
The top 6 reasons you should buy a pair of Tieks right now:
- They’re cute. Like, really cute. I get stopped by strangers (often) asking what brand they are. I’ve even been known to slip a foot out and offer a shoe to said strangers to try on. And those signature turquoise soles — love them.
- Comfort, comfort, comfort. I’ve got wide feet, bunions, high arches and narrow heels — it’s hard to find shoes that work with all of my foot issues. Tieks work. Over time, they’ll mold to the shape of your foot and feel like slippers.
- Fit. I wear anything from a size 8.5 to a 10 depending on the brand, but most often I find myself in 9s. I’m a perfect size 9 in Tieks — they fit true to size, and when in doubt, there’s a sizing chart when you click on any shoe.
- Quality. My first pair of Tieks, save for a few minor scuff marks on the toe, still look fantastic. And they have been worn a lot during the past couple of years.
- Convenience. So you’re a heels kinda gal like me, huh? But you can only last a few hours in those torture devices? Perfect. Take a pair of Tieks along with you in their self-contained baggy; pop them into your purse and use the bag to store your heels when you just can’t take one more minute of pain.
- Travel. A folded pair of Tieks only takes up a teeny-tiny corner of a purse or carry-on bag, and it’s the perfect walking shoe to explore a new city that may have you navigating hundreds of concrete steps in a single day and requires you to be bistro-ready in an instant.
3 pro tips from a Tieks owner:
- The classic leather Tieks are easier to break in than the patent or faux snakeskin varieties. So if you want that comfortable-as-butter feeling sooner rather than later, shop the “Classics” section in the Boutiek.
- Keep your big toenail super short when you’re breaking in your Tieks, or you may find yourself with a throbbing toe the first few wears. For whatever reason, taking the nail down reduces the pressure and your breaking-in period will be much better.
- If you aren’t pressed for space at home, store your Tieks UN-folded; you’ll find there’s much less pulling at your heel near the end of a long day of wonderful Tieks wearing in the first few months while you’re still getting used to each other.
But just get a pair already. You won’t regret it.

I just was gifted a pair of the tortoise shell Tieks and those are quite more than the originals and I don’t find them comfortable at all- I am sure they need to be broken in, but how does one do this without going through constant pain?!

Lovely gift! If you can’t stand breaking them in the old fashioned way, try the blow dryer method: https://lifehacker.com/break-in-a-pair-of-shoes-in-minutes-with-a-hair-dryer-1758845075

I’ve two pairs that have both not made it past the two-year mark. I’ve worn the leather to the point that I can stick my finder through the shoe. One pair was green leather and no matter how many times I clean and moisturize they still look gross.
I also kneel frequently at work which caused the tips of the front blue pads to break off on both shoes. They actually are pretty terrible looking.
I have just purchased a pair of patent ones which, when paired with a different job/less kneeling are doing much better.

How do you clean them from the inside. I sweat a lot from my feet (yes I do 🙁 ) and the inside is kind of stained now. Like dark brown and shows my foot prints when I remove them. Looks like they are dirty and hate that look and the fact that I’m embarrassed taking them off in public as I don’t want people to think I’m wearing stinky shoes lol.
Mommy Gearest says
Honestly, I would never think to do this! Mine are far from perfect on the inside but I wouldn’t care what others thought. One thing you might like to try is Gekks.
katherine sharone says
I use Oder Eaters in my Tieks. No odor and you can change them out as often as you want tol

I have FLAT feet, NO arch. My ankles tend to go inward… pronate? My heels are narrow. I have a substantial, painful bunion on one foot and smaller one on the other; when I flex my feet as I walk barefoot, the underside of my left foot is painful…from the bunion. Yet I need something comfortable to wear with all of these problems. I’m worried that I might have to take pain med while breaking them in…lol. With all of this said, I dare anyone connected with Tieks in any way to tell me that I’ll be miserable and shouldn’t try them! In the meantime… ANY FLAT FEET…I MEAN NOOOOOO arch at all, try them? Oh, and I’m a 10.5 or 11. Usually 11s fit in length but too wide. My good quality ballet flats now hit the front of my foot, and they hurt after a while. To try or not to try…that is the question!
Mommy Gearest says
I also pronate but not a CRAZY amount. I – on the other hand – have quite a high arch that usually needs to be supported. But my feet are fine in Tieks. Go figure.
Kayla says
They have a pretty generous return policy- you can return your pair at any time AS LONG AS YOU HAVEN’T WORN THEM OUTSIDE. So, if you’re really on the fence, maybe you could buy a pair and try them out inside for a while until you’re sure whether you like them or not.

Hi Fallen Feet and Susan,
I have the same type of feet and I bought 3 pairs of Tieks about two years ago: matte black, electric blue, and classic red. All were from the classic line. Anyway, I stretched them out in the toe area right away by inserting some big potatoes in them and leaving them for a night or two. With the roomy toe box, I started wearing them around the house for about an hour a day, building up the strength in my feet. I ended up getting a tiny arch after awhile because my feet got stronger. Last summer we went to Spain and Portugal. It was fabulous to just pack Tieks as my shoes; lots of uncharacteristic space in the suitcase 🙂
I walked over hill and over fake in Europe, also on lots of cobblestone streets. My feet were worn out and my legs hurt. I found that to be true on days when I just walked all day long. The pain and whatnot is most likely due to my biomechanics. I felt like my ankles might have been injured just from the pronation. My conclusion is that the Tieks are great for everyday if you have combined walking and sitting activities. If you are going be on your feet for several hours a day, they might not be a great choice for flat feet with overpronation and bunions. I find wooden clogs to be much better for my feet wheeling walks are involved. I opted for Tiejs because the podiatrist I saw wanted to put me in $1000 custom orthotics. I figured 3 Tieks were cheaper, and I had hoped my feet might get stronger and work their issues out a la minimalist shoes.
ME says
Flat feet, overpronation AND bunions? As a fellow podiatrist – yes, you need custom orthotics.
Mommy Gearest says
My feet actually have VERY high arches but they need support. Yes to the other two!! LOL. I have tried custom inserts and also OTC ones, and both work equally well for me BUT there are very few shoes in which they work. They don’t work in cute ballet flats or heels, so I just suffer.
Ana says
I use superfeet black arch inserts in my Tieks: they are about 1/2 or 3/4 length, go from the heel up to my arch, and provide plenty of support. I glue them in with Shoe Goo. Works great.
Also, my feet have improved over time RE pronating/flatness when I started doing some ballet-type exercises. Sort of incidentally, but if you do some online searches for feet-strengthening or ballet-arch-building exercises you’ll find ideas that, maybe possibly, might could help.

I have a pair of matte black Tieks and love them. I’m looking to snag another pair and have been eyeing the Tiek Blue or lemon patent but am really worried about going with a patent leather pair. I wondered if your patent Tieks have cracked at all? I have a pair of ballet flats by Calvin Klein that I absolutely love but the shiny gold patent leather has cracked and looks awful. I just don’t want that to happen with the Tieks.
Mommy Gearest says
I have the lemon patent and LOVE the way they look but they were so much harder to break in. They show more scuffs, too, than the matte. But definitely no cracking and I’ve had them for probably three years.

I have a question about the patent vs. leather – I have wide feet, and LOVE LOVE LOVE my 4 pairs of leather. I am interested in the teal color, but it is only available in patent. Will the patent stretch to fit as comfortably as the matte did?
Mommy Gearest says
I’m not gonna lie: the patent are harder to break in. Now, I have a patent pair and now they fit quite well, but the break-in period was definitely longer.
Danielle Cedrone says
I have five pair of matter leather Tieks and did try a patent leather pair and had to return them — way too stiff for me. I have high arches and bunions and the leather just didn’t give like the matte ones do, and they also cut into the back of my heel. So if you have problem feet, I would stick with matte!
Mommy Gearest says
The patent is way harder to break in! For sure!! I’m in Canada so returns are not easy or cheap, especially after paying for international delivery and duty charges. So I kept them. I’m glad I did because I do love the look…but it took about a year if wear before they were comfortable.

After reading all these comments I am not going to put my order through. Perhaps Tieks were the “go to” flats at one time, but something is definitely wrong. The quality has likely been compromised as a result of increased customer demand. Good luck to everyone who continues to purchase Tieks.
Andrea Nelson says
I agree. I have only had mine a few weeks and now one is slipping off the back of my heel because they aren’t made the same width in the back. The one that is now slipping off my heel, is sagging down in the back like I have been walking on the back of the shoe. But there’s no way in hell I would wear these the wrong way because of how expensive they are!! These things were babied and didn’t even last a month!!
Mommy Gearest says
I think you should let their customer service team know.
Nina says
I have eyed these for years but wasn’t sure the cost was worth it, especially since they looked like they would hug my bunions. I have a lot of foot issues and nearly all shoes hurt me, even when they seemed comfortable in the store. I finally splurged on these and LOVE them! Right out of the box. I’m sticking with the softer classics for now but may branch out later, with nothing to lose considering the free return shipping. I read one review that the snake prints are made with split grain vs. full and more comfortable than the classic, but another said prints are less comfortable and harder to break in. I’d love to hear opinions from anyone who has experience with the snake prints about their comfort and break in!
Mommy Gearest says
I have a snakeskin pair and I didn’t find the break-in period much different than the original. I do find that the heel is slightly lower at the back but that is a cut issue and likely varies slightly from shoe to shoe anyway. I love the way they look! And they don’t show ANY wear AT ALL.

Hi, I purchased my first pair of Tieks about 6 weeks ago and love them. (Black matte classics) I was online to order a pair of the Taupe and maybe the silver. I decided to pull mine off and inspect to see how they are holding up. To my surprise the thread in my left shoe had broken and 5-6 stitches had come out. 🙁 I did take pictures and email customer service. I googled this problem and found a lot of reviews where the same thing has happened. The shoes have not been worn in the rain. I’m disappointed, I expected them to hold up better. If I spend $175-$200 for a pair of shoes I expect to wear them at least as long as I’ve worn others that cost $40. I am sure their excellent customer service will take care of this. But really, I store them flat, have never bent them at all.
Mommy Gearest says
I don’t know what to tell you – even my first pair (now three or four years old that get worn A LOT) only show their age on the tips of the toes, where some of the colour is rubbing off. I’m sure Tieks will take care of you!

Great customer service! They sent me postage paid label to return them for repair. I ordered two more pair, the taupe and the pewter. Love them all. I did purchase some Gekks liners, for cleanliness and because the feel of the stitches in these shoes bug me. Great addition to Tieks! Thanks for all your info.

I purchased my first pair (black matte) last month and love them. 2 days ago I noticed the threading on the back of both shoes was unthreading and the sole of one of them was peeling up. I’m so disappointed! These shoes are too expensive to have these problems after 1 month. I contacted Tieks customer service and sent pictures. Their response was “we’ve never had this happen and will exchange them this one time”. “Never” had this happen?? I’ve since read numerous reviews of this happening. Again, I’ve only had these shoes for exactly 32 days. If they were over a year old and worn every day, I could understand wear and tare but not after 32 days. As much as I love these shoes, I will not invest $175 in another pair.
Mommy Gearest says
I hope they sorted you out. I can only speak from experience, but none of my five pairs have done this at all!

I have bought two pairs of Tieks. With both pairs, the toe side of the sole have cracked within one week of wearing. I exchanged one pair because they said ” we have never seen this before.” I’m not rock climbing in these shoes, I’m simply walking around the office and running errands. I have found that hat to keep my Tieks from looking trashy, I must use a leather cleaner and moisturizer every few months. Otherwise they look dirty and dried out.
Mommy Gearest says
Honest to God, I’ve never used a cleaner or moisturizer with any of my Tieks — and some are nearing 4 years old!

I ordered a size12 in the tieks. So far they fit very nice. I have a little room, however They are not too big. I think an 11 1/2 would be too short for that toe print. I think Tieks are my new friend. I am going to wear them the rest of the week and I will give my final grade.

I have read all the positive reviews on this shoes so I decided to give it a try. I got the matte black & wore it to work for the 1st time today. I almost didn’t make it to the car from my office. This shoes hurt the side of my big toes & heals. I had to put a bandage to prevent rubbing. I’m so disappointed. I thought this would be my go to shoes. I’m hoping once I break it in it would feel better but I’m not looking forward to more pain.

After reading the reviews, I decided to go ahead and splurge on 2 pairs of Tieks. Sadly, they will probably go back. I LOVE them, but they do not love my feet. I have wide feet with fairly large bunions. Normally I wear 9s so I ordered 9s and 10s in black and the Sunset Stripe. The Sunset Stripe in 10 fit the best, but after 10-15 minutes they rub on both bunions causing pain. The shoes hit the top of my bunions at just the wrong place – 1/4 inch of more shoe in the toe would probably cover the bunions. Some reviews say they need to break them in, but I really just cannot handle the pressure on my bunions for more than 15 minutes. I am sad. But, my daughter with normal feet, loves her pair!
Vanessa says
Joan, that is my issue exactly 🙁 I had a pair before this that did not put the same pressure but there was a defect and I was told to send them back and received a replacement pair. I am in my 5th month and although it did get better right around 3-4 mons, I STILL feel the pressure after a long day. I stuck it out with these but doubt I would get another pair unless I get my bunions fixed!
Joan Russo says
Update – I ended up ordering a pair of 10s in matte black and after a few days they have molded to me feet and do not hurt my bunions. My heels are narrow, but these do not slip. So, in my case – I went up 1.5 sizes to get them to fit. Hopefully they don’t stretch and become too large! For the vegan shoes – I’ll probably have to go up to and 11 – but that isn’t in the budget right now.
Mommy Gearest says
Wow! And the length isn’t way too long?

Wow! And the length isn’t way too long?

Got my first pair in a 9 (I usually wear 8.5-9, but have a wide foot and issues with toes #3 & 4 on my left foot). They were really tight and I could feel the edge of the turquoise sole under both big toes so after a few minutes it really hurt to walk. That said they had pretty big gaps at the side and I could slip my finger under the arch of my foot. I ordered the 10 and they feel better – I don’t feel the sole, for example, BUT, they really gap in the middle at the sides. Is this normal? They don’t feel big enough to slide off but I can push the material in at the back, just under the top, and they look kinda weird on my feet, like still kinda scrunched up, if that makes sense. Right now I have them on, just sitting around, and my toes feel numb. For those of you who find yours really comfortable, how do they look when they fit? Has anyone else experienced feeling the sole on the bottom of their toes the way I have? Numbness?
Vanessa says
I had a paid I bought last Summer and I was starting to feel super comfortable after about 3 months and then there was a split in the blue sole. I called and sent pics and tieks then decided to replace them. Well! It’s been 4 months and these are just not getting comfortable. The other day I wore them when we walked a ton and the next day I put them back on and within 3-4 hours I was limping. The pressure on my big toes and the bone where a bunion would develop killed me. Even a while after they are off there is a bit of numbness on the side of my big toe. I couldn’t see myself ever buying a 2nd pair…but I am determined to get my use out of these by breaking them in!

Ok, I just got my first pair of matte blacks. I went through my closet prior to ordering and all of my shoes pretty much range from 8.5-9. So I ordered the 9’s. I am wearing them around the house to make sure, but I feel like they fit great, but I am keenly aware of pressure on my big toe. Not pain, but pressure. So I called customer service, they sent me the 10’s. The 10’s are slightly “roomy”, but my concern is that I can kick a few times and fling them off my feet. I am worried if I kept the 10’s they might stretch slightly and eventually not really fit at all. But I am worried with the 9’s that when I actually wear them all day, walking outside of my house that I will regret that “pressure” on my big toe. Seriously feel like 9.5 would be perfect, but of course that is not an option….. any thoughts?

I’m in the same boat! I wear a 8.5-9 usually. I ordered my first pair in 9 last summer. I keenly felt the pressure in my big toe, but didn’t request a compare and kept them. I got blisters in my heels and around my big toes when I walked around in them for a day. Fast forward six months later – the shoes have stretched a bit but I still get red marks on my heels and big toe. I recently ordered another pair in 9 and also asked for a 10 to compare. The 10 is much more roomy and I do not have the tight pressure on the toes. They feel a bit roomier, maybe a 1/2 size too large. But I think I am going to keep the 10 and return the 9 because I can slip an insole in if the 10s get too loose, but nothing I can do about the pair that is too tight.

What I was wondering is, do you have to break them in without socks? I know they supposedly mold to a person’s feet but I hate the idea of suffering for weeks. I’d just really like to wear shoes after I get them and enjoy doing so!

I don’t wear socks (like, ever, really), so I did break them in bare-footed.

Hi,
I’m considering buying the original leather Tieks, but I’m hesitant and wanted to know how they will break in and also if you had any peeling of leather with your Tieks?
Thanks.

The break-in period will be different for everyone. Please see my first Tieks post (linked in this one) to read about my experience. I have had no peeling issues with any of my 5 pairs. 🙂

I just purchased my first pair and was worried after receiving them. I’m normally a size 8 so I ordered an 8. My feet swell by the end of the week so when I tried them on, they felt tight. I ordered a 9 to compare the two and they feel a good except a little loose on the sides. I’m not sure which to keep. I’m afraid the 9 will stretch and be too loose, or that the 8 won’t stretch and be too tight. I can already feel that pressure around my toe in the 8 and I’ve only had them on for 20 minutes. The 9 has no toes pressure so far, but I can feel it rubbing slightly around the top side where it may be a tiny bit loose.
Considering the stretching that occurs, what would you recommend keeping?
Mommy Gearest says
This is so tough. If they’re slipping AT ALL, I’d say don’t get the bigger pair. THE toe issue will go away but it will be a few months while you break them in.

Hey! Just out of curiosity, how has the metallic pair held up? Do you think you’ve seen some of the the metallic sheen come off?? I can be pretty hard on my shoes, but just got the metallic bronze pair and want to make sure they hold up as nice as my other pairs have.
Thanks!!
Mommy Gearest says
To be honest, I wear those ones the least because the colour turned out to be not as metallic as I was hoping…so it would be unfair of me to say.
Mariya Davis says
I just got the metallic bronze as well and after a couple of weeks, I have some spots where the leather has peeled/come off. (the spot isn’t overly huge (yet), but still. I wish I could exchange for a regular classic color, but you can tell the usage. But funny thing is I only wore the shoes in the house or at my job (office setting), a few times outside while going to target and whatnot, I wasn’t rough on the shoes, so I’m really disappointed the leather started to peel already. That’s a huge disappointment considering these are $200 pair of shoes. I’ve contacted customer service today to see if they can do anything for me. But I won’t be purchasing any metallic colors in the future again. I’m kinda iffy about purchasing any others as I don’t want the color to peel off.
Mommy Gearest says
I have worn my fuchsia ones A LOT and the only place they have no colour left is the very tips of the toes. Maybe it’s just a metallic issue? I would definitely see what customer service says.
Mariya Davis says
Well I was very surprised with Customer Service. They said they would let me exchange for another pair either the bronze or any other one. I got a regular classic color, the pacific green color. I just got them today, hopefully these will hold up and the color won’t peel. But I actually think that was an issue with the metallic ones so I should be good to go.
Customer Service said I must of come in contact with a rough surface, but one of the spots it peeled was on the top of my shoe, so I don’t think it came in contact with a rough surface, maybe the area at the bottom of my shoe, but not the top. Anyways, I’m so glad they let me exchange them for a different pair. Like everyone says, great customer service.
Mommy Gearest says
That’s fantastic news! Please keep me posted.

I have a pair of Poppy…and this is my 2nd pair. They graciously exchanged the first pair due to the color/leather cracking and peeling, and also the color coming completely off. My 2nd pair, is doing the EXACT same thing. They were a gift and I hate that such an expensive gift, has been wasted. yes, they are comfy, but I assume for $200 they would hold up better. I don’t wear them anywhere other than to work (office job) and to pick up my kids and home. I have never worn them any place other than work.
As much as I would like to try another pair, I won’t chance it.
Mommy Gearest says
And the poppy is so nice! have you called customer service again? MAYBE it’s an issue with just that colour? I have no crwcking or peeling experiences across my 5 pairs. MAYBE they can exchange for fuchsia — my fave and have had zero issues with the colour.

I bought my first pair (classic black) two weeks ago. They were a little snug in the toe area, so I shoved socks in there to stretch them out That’s helping! I bought another pair last week (class taupe) and have no problems with them. So comfortable!!! I’ve never found a flat that doesn’t bother either my heal or my big toe. I’m hooked! Can’t wait to see how much more comfortable they are after they are broken in. Thank you for your review!

Hm…not something I’ve experienced but people will tend to come here to relay their experiences with quality. I just spent 8 days walking around the streets of Madrid and Ibiza in one of my pairs – I wore them EVERY night, including dancing for 5-6 hours on two occasions. Still perfect.

This happened to me too. I bought my first pair late last Summer and by the early fall, broken up front. Mine were already broken in so I was happy and bummed at the same time when they offered to swap out my broken soled shoes for new ones. I do wish they were more consistent in fit. These new ones I’ve had since November and I am still trying to break them in. Big toes and joint still ache after just a few hours. I really want to love them but even after 4 months, my others weren’t “super” comfortable.

I’m so disappointed in these shoes. I ordered 2 styles in 2 sizes each so I could compare. In the patterned ones, the smaller size fits better. In the classics, the bigger size fits better. Not a good fit, but better. But, the ones I kind of decided to keep were bugging me so I analyzed why. Ohhh, because they are different sizes on the top! One is longer than the other, that’s handmade for ya! For $250, I think they need to be perfect! I guess they will all have to go back. It would be nice if they had half sizes like the Sam Edelmans….
Mommy Gearest says
Ugh! So sorry to hear that. At least they have a great return policy. You should provide the brand with your feedback for sure.

The more I read about these, the more I think that their quality is going down hill. Maybe a few years ago they were ok but with all their amazing marketing skills going on they have gotten too big for their britches and can’t keep up! The Leopards seem to be the most recent that have white dots (peeling, flaking) right out of the pretty blue box….

I just bought my first pair in metallic pewter, but sent them right back. I’m a 9.5W with high arches, and got a 10, but I think they were a tad too long. They also felt too tight and I was concerned about pain, because I easily get severe pain in my big toe joint with snug shoes. I would have given them a longer trial, but the quality control wasn’t good on my pair and the left shoe had a big permanent crease in the leather right at the toe, and the right one was perfectly smooth. I wanted to love them, but didn’t want the hassle of sending back a defective pair AND wondering if I got the right size AND not sure if they would break in properly after all that sending back and forth. Oh well, I guess my wallet was glad…. I was sad it didn’t work out for me.

Hi. I just received my first pair of tieks and I ordered an 8 and 9. The size 8 my toes are right at the end and they feel alittle tight and hurt my one toe. The size 9 seem better but alittle loose (they do not come off though). I am debating on which size I should keep especially since they are so expensive. When I spoke to a customer service rep she said they will not stretch length Wise. Any thoughts on how they should fit to make sure I choose the correct size. TIA. 🙂

It’s such a hard thing for me to comment on from afar. But I will tell you that my toes are at the very end of my 9s – there’s even a little toe dent where it’s worn its way in. Walk around in them each for a few days — you may find that the 9 are the right fit after all. Just be sure they aren’t slipping off AT ALL! 🙂

That’s bizarre. You should contact the company. I have had my first pair for more than 3 years and the only signs of wear (other than the soles which are dirty and scuffed from walking) are the tips of the toes where the colour is starting to rub off.

I just got my first pair and I am not loving the shape of my foot and of course these take the shape of your foot. I have not yet worn them outside because I am not positive I will keep them. This is tough! I also have a high arch and find that this folded shape they are still in leave a pocket of air where some arch support should be. I really want to love these…just afraid to wear them and not love them 🙁 anyone wear no show type socks with theirs? I felt a bit more support with the socks (and they are microfiber, no show type). Ever have similar worry or concerns with yours?

question.. I have noticed that some of the tieks in the original leather pattern can either look very matte and smooth or the leather can be a bit more crinkly or wrinkly. I spoke to a tieks representative who advised that it is all from the same cut of leather but the leather can vary in texture. Do you think one texture/pattern is better than the other?
Mommy Gearest says
I personally like the break-in of the classic matte leather best.

I’m almost at the point of ordering my first pair. But, how does the shoe breathe? Does it cause the feet to smell and sweat? That is the biggest peeve I have with flats and the reason I own only one pair. When I do wear them, I take them off at any chance just to give the feet fresh air and avoid the uncomfortable sweaty shoe walk and the smell. I’d love to hear your experience and thoughts. Thanks!
Mommy Gearest says
I personally find that the “original” leather breathes well. The patent and the snakeskin-like ones I have aren’t quite as breathable. That said, I don’t find that any of them get stinky or anything. The patent ones do sweat a little in hot weather so perhaps for people who have some existing food odour, this makes it worse? Not sure. However, I’d stick with those that look like matte leather on the Tieks site. Right now, they’re called “classics” on the home page. 🙂

I just bought my first pair and they arrived last week. I’ve worn them around a few days and today I noticed the back of one of the heels already has scuff marks!! Is there a way to avoid this, or have you been able to clean yours? Any tips would be helpful!
Mommy Gearest says
Unfortunately, there will be scuff marks but they won’t be bad! Three years in and my first pair still look like they did after the end of the first month of wear. It’s just that they’re so shiny and pretty and perfect when they arrive that you really do notice every nick for the first bit.

Hi!
I bought my first pair as a birthday gift to myself and they arrived yesterday. I’m a pretty solid size 8, although my foot is somewhat flat (thanks to years of Keds) and wide, but nothing major. I bought the vegan Greystone in an 8 and they are sooooo tight, my toes are squished and they rub the back of my heel.
I emailed Tieks to ask about getting a 9, but now I’m wondering if it’s the vegan material that’s the problem. I’ve read a few other blog posts that say the leather ones stretch more easily. In any case, I’m waiting to hear back and have not worn them outside, as their return policy is void if you do.
Do you have a pair in their vegan style? Did you have any problems initially? I want to love these and buy more pairs, especially for traveling! I hope the size 9’s do the trick!
Thank you!
Claudine
Mommy Gearest says
Yikes. I do NOT own anything but the “original” leather and the patent leather. As I wrote in one of my posts, I found the original much easier to break in than the patent — so perhaps the vegan has very little give at all. If the 9s come and are too big, you’d probably be best to go back down to the 8 but in an original leather. Then, give them time and you should fall in love with them!
Mommy Gearest says
I’m so sorry but I know nothing about the vegan ones…I have only leather and patent leather. Please let me know how they turn out!
Naomi says
Claudine, I have the vegan Greystone in an 8, and mine were also tight. I had them send the 9 so I can see if it fit better, and they’re too big. When I tried to think about the feel of the shoe, ignoring the tightness, I have to say I’m not impressed. They don’t feel anymore comfortable than the clearance flats I got at Target for $8.98. Now I know it’s practically sacrilege to say you don’t like these, but I’ve been reading comments online, and it seems like I am not the only one out there who don’t find these that comfortable. Like you, I have flat and wide feet…pregnancy destroyed my feet! Maybe that’s the problem. I also don’t think this material would stretch the way leather would. I really wanted to like these, but I think I have to send both pairs back.
Good luck with yours! I hope sizing up fixes your problem.
Mommy Gearest says
Like anything, really, no one thing works for all people. I would imagine that no material stretches and custom forms to the foot like leather, and so I wouldn’t expect vegan shoes to feel as comfortable. I have wide feet with high arches and narrow heels and once they’re broken in, there’s nothing as cute for my feet that feel this good.

Has anyone had their Tieks “squeak?” I bought an 8 (I’m usually a 7.5) and they were a little big, comfy but I felt like they would come off. Requested a 7 and they are snug, though from this review it sounds like that’s just part of the breaking in period. But they also make noises with every step! I can handle the breaking in period, but I can’t handle if they continue to squeak once they are broken in! Anyone else have the same issue, and if so did it go away?
Mommy Gearest says
I never had any squeaking or weird noises EXCEPT with my patent pair. I also found them the hardest to break in. However, they did finally break in and the noises did go away. 🙂
Abigail says
I received my first pair, classic taupe size 7, and they “squeak” as well! I ordered a size 6 to see if maybe the size 7 is the wrong size for me. I agree, the squeak will drive me crazy! I’m not exactly sure how they are supposed to fit since I’ve read that they stretch to conform to your foot……so do I buy them snug fitting or have a little room at the toe?? Help!
Mommy Gearest says
I wear a 9 and my toes are at the very end…if you read my first review, you’ll note that I had some toe pain at the beginning because of this. But a 10 would be too big for sure. I don’t recall a squeak but you definitely do have a break-in period ahead of you. Worth it, IMO, though!
Abigail says
Update……I received my size 6 Classics replacements today and they fit a tiny bit snug but I really think I found the perfect size. Happy, Happy! Now to pick out my next pair!

What color are the Tieks pictured above??
Mommy Gearest says
Hi Therese – they’re Metallic Gold (http://tieks.com/metallic-gold.html); but I should note that I found them to be less “metallic” in real life than I’d hoped. They’re a great neutral, though!

How long does the break in period last? I got mine on Saturday and have worn them every day since for a substantial amount of time…at least 4hrs. And they hurt!
Mommy Gearest says
Hi Maria – oh, definitely longer than a week or two! You should try to wear them for a couple of hours a day for the first few weeks and increase from there. I’d say mine were finally totally broken in by the third month. It was worth it…they’re like slippers!!
Christin~ says
Thanks! I needed to hear that too.. I’m on day 4 and don’t “love” mine yet…

Oh, you’re so early into your Tieks relationship!! You definitely need to give it some time. That’s why I wrote a two-year update…LOL! But I have 5 pairs, so that should tell you something. 🙂

Thanks for the reviews. It seems so impossible to find bunion-friendly AND trendy/cute shoes. You’ve given me new inspiration, now to come up with the money!

Hi, I just bought my first pair of Tieks yesterday. They are absolutely glorious! One little spot on the side of my big toe joint rubs on the edge of the shoes, and I’m wondering how long it takes to break this spot in, and if you have recommendations for speeding up the process. I’m in love with these shoes and want to invest in a neutral pair (I bought fuschia for spring!) but want to first make sure that they will be absolutely perfectly comfortable before I invest in a second pair.
Mommy Gearest says
Congrats! You will be wanting a second pair, but definitely let your feet get used to the first pair before you place another order. 🙂 If you bought the basic leather Tieks (rather than patent leather), the great news is that the break-in period is shorter. But there definitely still is a breaking-in period and it could be anywhere from two to six months. But stick with it! Because soon they’ll fit your feet perfectly and feel like slippers.
Suzi says
I read somewhere else that you can shorten the break-in time by putting on some socks and then your tieks and heating your feet with a blowdryer on the hot setting. That makes the leather mold to your foot faster. I have a pair of black classic tieks that I’m going to try that on. I’ve had them for a while but don’t wear them because they rub on my foot and make a weird farty sound with each step, which is not cool. Hopefully the sock thing will help.
Mommy Gearest says
That’s a great idea to try — as is mink oil (which you can get from just about any shoe store). Because, yeah…farting noises coming from your shoes is never cool. 😉
Beth Koehler says
I’m so glad you said that! I just got my first pair today. I’m trying to break them in at home. I need to wear them to a convention next week b/c none of my shoes are fashionable AND comfortable. BUT not only are they killing my big toes, they make horrible farting sounds.
Did the sock and blowdryer trick work?
