Let’s be honest: there’s never a bad time to travel.
But if we’re talking “optimal” travel seasons, there are some obvious choices. In winter, all I want to do is escape Canadian winters and rake in as much vitamin D from the south as I can; and I prefer to do this beach-side whenever possible. Summer is perfect for exploring our lakes and beaches right here at home—with a recent visit to Muskoka coming to mind as the ideal setting.
And with fall approaching, my mind turns to city-escapes. Charlotte. New York City. Ottawa. New Orleans. San Antonio. Vancouver.
Without the searing summer heat beating down and being magnified by the sheer number of people and buildings that can make busy cities feel cramped and stuffy at the best of times, autumn brings with it the kind of temperatures that offer comfortable walkability to experience new places and familiar favourites that are only a short drive or plane ride away.
Big B and I have been saving our Aeroplan points to do just that, and we’ve amassed enough for a pair of return tickets within North America and a couple of nights in a nice hotel.
So, where to go?
If we want to stay on home soil, Halifax is a great option. I’ve yet to go Down East in Canada despite it being near the top of my travel bucket list for years. For 50,000 combined Aeroplan rewards points, Big B and I can fly to and from Halifax with Air Canada the first weekend in October—and for just 35,000 additional points, we can stay for two nights at The Westin Nova Scotian.
For the same number of points, we could book flights to Chicago that weekend—where I’ve wanted to take Big B since my brief solo visit in 2013. But there aren’t really any hotels I’m into available on points. Moving on.
Heading farther south means we could travel later in the fall as the cooler weather here threatens to derail leisurely city strolls on foot. Let’s talk California, people! Flights in mid-November are still just 25,000 Aeroplan points per person, return from Toronto to San Jose. And the Fairmont San Jose is calling my name at 60,500 points for a two-night weekend stay.
The only question that remains is: who wants to babysit for us?
