This guest review of Yummy YUCKY by Leslie Patricelli ($8) is written by Sarah Lynn from the popular blog YYZ Bambina. You can read more about her in a previous guest review or connect with her on Twitter.
I personally love Patricelli’s books. One of our consistent favourites ’round these parts is Quiet LOUD.

My family moved a few times when I was younger, and I always insisted on keeping all of my childhood books. I donated my Barbies, My Little Pony toys and even my extensive Babysitters Club collection (even the Super Editions!) to Goodwill. However, I refused to part with my picture books. Most are classics that never get old, and teach children important lessons regardless of the decade. I knew that one day I wanted to have children, and reading my favourite books to my daughter have been some of my favourite memories with her so far.
One of the more delightfully surprising things for me as a new parent is discovering all of the awesome picture books that have been published between the late 1980s and now. A new favourite is Yummy YUCKY by Leslie Patricelli.
THE GOOD
This book is amazing. It compares yummy things to eat versus yucky things to eat. My personal favourite comparison is “Burgers are yummy. Boogers are yucky.” My daughter loves that “stinky socks” made it in to the last page – a compilation of yucky things. She shows appreciation by giving up a glorious baby giggle every time I read those two words.
The bright and colourful backgrounds always keep her attention. She loves the baby’s facial expressions while he’s eating the yucky versus yummy things.
Even my Mom was amused reading this book!
The story is the perfect length for baby, and the short, simple sentences maintain a good rhythm throughout. The size of the board book allows my daughter to turn the pages herself with ease.
And, while teaching my daughter what’s yucky to eat, it also taught me – a new parent – about products I never worried about before. I never thought about my daughter attempting to eat fish food, something I casually keep near our tank, but now she will know that fish sticks are what she should focus on. And now I know to hide the fish food from sight before she becomes tall enough to grab it.
THE GAFFE
There is nothing I disliked about this book. I would recommend it to anyone! (In our house, I’m sure it will remain a bedtime favourite for years to come.)
