Su-su-sudio is obviously the first thing I thought of when Sudio Sweden got in touch asking if I would review its new Bluetooth-enabled headphones called the VASA BLA. Until the packaging came, I had no idea that the name was borne out of an encounter with Phil Collins. (You’ll have to check out the website or packaging to get the full story.)
It wasn’t the name so much as the look and the promise of a semi-wireless earbud experience that interested me.
THE GOOD
They’re stinkin’ gorgeous. I chose the white and rose gold pair because I am on a total kick right now with that colour combo (as shown in a recent Instagram post) and they look exactly like I expected them to after seeing them online.
Sudio’s VASA BLA headphones come with a compact leather pouch, charging cord, loads of earbud sizes (which I need because apparently my ear canals are child-size), a clip to keep them close when they’re not in your ears but you don’t want them put away, and a handy quick-start guide that fits in said leather pouch.
It’s pretty easy to get them charged and paired with any device, and they stay charged for up to eight hours. I was even able to make and accept phone calls with ease, and Big B on the other end said he could hear me loud and clear.
The sound is crisp and full. I’m by no means a sound expert, but I’ve owned crappy headphones before, and in general usually find earbuds don’t deliver sound the same way headphones do, but these are excellent.
Did I mention they’re pretty?
Oh, and free shipping worldwide.
I love that the only wire goes from one ear to the other. Nothing to get tangled up in as you walk/workout/clean/whatever. And they don’t fall out.
THE GAFFE
The Sudio case is compact, which is great, but because the leather is so good and strong, it doesn’t feel like it opens up quite as much as it should. I’d love a thinner leather. Or even a small hard case instead.
I hesitate to take these on a long journey where a plug isn’t easily accessible for recharging. For example, I’m leaving for Spain today and will not be taking the the VASA BLA earbuds on my eight-hour flight because if I’m delayed, it will inevitably mean that I could miss some of the programming I choose on-board if the charge runs out before we land. But for shorter flights or road trips? Hella yes. And for my weekly commute, I’ve been loving them something fierce. But at $140, I want them to be my ONLY pair. So if you’re a frequent long-haul traveller, these might not be for you.
