Although I recently read that VarageSale — with more than a million members globally — officially launched in Ontario on July 22, I’ve been officially using VarageSale to sell everything from baby clothes to strollers to electronics for well over a year.
It all started when my neighbour’s daughter had on a pair of really adorable Robeez slippers; when I commented on them, she said she got them for $3 on VarageSale. I think I asked “what garage sale?” about four times. Then she showed me the app. And then I downloaded it and have been using it successfully ever since.
In fact, I’ve sold more of my old stuff thanks to VarageSale than using Craigslist, Kijiji and Facebook combined.
Dreamt up by Tami Zuckerman whose programmer husband managed to make it as app-tastic as it is, VarageSale is comprised of communities. So you know exactly where your goods are coming from and if you don’t want to drive across three city boundaries to snag yourself a deal, only join the community in which you live. Because I commute to Toronto each week for work, I’ve joined about five different communities across the Greater Toronto Area because I don’t mind driving to any of them.
Two other important things you need to know about VarageSale:
- It’s free to use. You don’t need to pay to list your items, and you don’t owe VarageSale a cent when you sell them.
- Most people sign up with their Facebook profiles, so you know who you’re dealing with — first and last names on display.
For the company’s Ontario launch, it’s partnered with First Book Canada to give back. Did you know that nearly 25 per cent of homes in Canada don’t have a single book in it? Crazy, right? First Book Canada is getting books into kids’ hands who need them the most. Now, when any new or existing community in Ontario adds 1,500 new members, VarageSale will donate $2,500 to First Book Canada. That equals 600+ books in each local community!
C-E-L-E-B-R-A-T-I-O-N!

And we’re going to chat more about First Book Canada. But since you want to know more about VarageSale already, go ahead and download the app before Wednesday and join a group for your community!
But really, what’s a Twitter Party without some awesomesauce prizes? We’re giving away four (4) $150 VISA gift cards and one (1) grand prize — a $400 VISA gift card — throughout the party.
